Why does kroger insist on calling on departments to help up front when it gets busy.  Makes more sense to have enough cashiers to begin with.  And if you keep getting called up front and don't finish your work in your department management gets pissed.  And don't even think of staying over to finish.

It would be nice if it worked that way at my store but 9 times out of 10 it doesnt happen. Especially when people call in, and we can't get replacements in time. There are many days when I've been stuck for HOURS on end as the ONLY bagger in the store, especially in the extreme heat, with no offer of a drink or anything (strangely enough). Once out of the many times I've worked on the lot have they offered to expense out drinks to baggers.

they could hire as many people as they wanted and it wouldnt make a difference because of ELMS. elms controls how many hours we get based on how much money we are given by our zone manager for hours. so using people that are in different deptartments is the only way around the shortage of hours.

the hours allowed are based on the budget,   with so many allocated to each job--bagging,  retrieving carts,  register,,,cleaning floor.   wave 2 of key retailing was supposed to give us more hours,  say for bagging, so that we could have a 1/1  bagger/cashier ratio.  havent seen it.   corprate would love to see almost everyone cross trained, so we can call different people up.  what no one seems to realize is that if someone from grocery or non foods isn;t on register once or twice a week, they really are no help during a crisis.    and yes,  at my store, we have a cooler of ice water on the front end for everyone getting carts.
