Starting Thursday.. What should I expect?!

I had my interview Friday and now I'm going into orientation Thursday.. After that I'm going to be working in the deli and bakery department.. Just curious for anyone who has worked in that part on what it's like and what I should expect.. I have another job right now too and I am hoping Kroger maybe works around that since I only work there 6 hours a week.. What kind of hours does the deli and bakery department get?? Any input in appriciated.. I am looking to see how this works out before I decide to give up my job I already have..

Expect the big black deli clerk to take regular dumps in random locations throughout the deli. You might here random, WOOOOOH JESUS and THANKYA LORD. Also expect her weave to be everywhere.

To answer your question they'll fill your schedule, they always need you. So make sure MyTime is accurate and approved or you'll get screwed into 8 hour shifts. Communicate with store director to be sure.  Part time status means absolutely nothing in Deli and Bakery. They will fill you to 36 hours if you arent careful to get around having to pay you as a full timer.  You'll be on maintenece forms your first few weeks, if any longer remind them to get you a kronos (timeclock code).  Always ask if you have any questions.  If you do not know, ALWAYS ask. 

As the rest of this thread says, you pretty much got assigned two of the most difficult departments in the store at once.  You will make a lot of mistakes.  And as someone whose now rolling over into a year at both departments, dont worry about making them.  Its part of learning.  If you need to move slower to get used to using a slicer and the deep fryer please do.  Your safety is important. if you do not have PPE or tools you need, make a list snd leave it with the office, and do not do the work if you are instructed to without the proper tools and being shown how.    

 Dont pay attention to people doing things really fast.  They have had practice and you have not.  Ypu're going to be expected to make them for a while.  So dont let making one get you down.

 Do NOT under ANY circumstances complain to the morning crew about the mess THEY left behind. Yes, you ARE supposed to clean up after yourself and not leave a mess behind, but complaining about morning crew's mess in deli/bakery is like swimming in shark infested water during a feeding frenzy. Not a good idea unless you want to be torn to pieces by them. (At least thats how it is in my store disbelief..)

 

Do not return the favor and leave a mess for them. Not only will it backfire, you'll have double the mess plus a nasty note written (again, at least in my store.)

 Find a blubber to romance make sure shes a higher up that way you can get special favors if you sat her fat. Also watch out for turds in the break room microwave. Theres been talk of it being hit up.

This is a repetitious minimum wage go no where job. Do it for 15 months then start seeking other employment. It's a good health insurance job but that's about it. It's not the "best" job in the world. Depending on where you are on the pay scale could mean it's a livable paycheck or not. As an employee be prepared to not be treated like a human being when you're at work but rather a slave to the customers. 

Stores are so short staffed right now that you'll find your self being the only employee in the department or kiosk half the time. It varies store to store but it could either be a good work environment or totally toxic. When working in kiosk jobs you'll either get along with your coworkers or you won't. You'll always have your favorites and unfavorites to work with. If you absolutely can't stand someone you can request to be placed on opposite schedule of them.

If you're curious about pay go to ufcw and look up contract. A lot of questions can be answered by just reading the union contract. Very few stores are non union. People have mixed reviews regarding the union and I honestly don't know why you'd want to work this line of work without a union. Trust me you want it.

Bakery/deli hours operate between 5 am and 10 pm. They vary store to store and depending upon staffing. Until 2019 I've never seen a closed sign at the deli due to lack of staff. Half the time you'll be by your self and during prime time you might have an extra helper. Most of your job duties will be setting up the deli, filling up the cases, monitoring food sanitation and temperatures, filling customer orders. Lots and lots of cleaning. Bakery is working with pastries and cakes all day long. Your job is to monitor the department area to be sure it's full of product. Fill in customer orders and your basic daily job duties. People are very picky about their cake orders. Most are cool about it but now and then you'll get that one in a million @$$ hole but it doesn't happen all that often. Most of this can be avoided with good customer service.

Agreed, there's so much to do in the morning, there's no f*** time to clean.  I carry a blue bottle to spray with water, but that's about all I have time for.  This is why closers exist, and they shouldn't complain about their job description.  Quite often, the mess isn't being done on purpose, its part of going absolutely nuts slinging cookie and bread trays in and out of ovens in Bakery with stacks of trays and boxes and label printers running non-stop and Deli's massive amount of sandwich and salad prep work needing to be completed before 10 AM.

Also, don't touch the cheese clerk's prep counter, they are venomous about people taking their supplies.

It is like any other big company but more chaotic and nasty. Be nice and let them think you are stupid so you don't stand out. If management is thinking about you it could cause big problems depending on their personalities. Be nice to customers. Management knows to expect troublemakers who cannot be satisfied, so give management opportunities to help with this. If someone tries to be your supervisor (or they actually are) and tells you to do something dangerous or illegal, don't.

This job is a stepping stone to something better.
