kroger discrimination of long time employees
Permalink

Am I the only one out here who feels Kroger's is trying to get rid of their long time (older) employees?
Our union is not very strong, benefits and pay are spiraling down, and upper management gets bonuses.
I know of several local long time employees who have been burned. Management is altering their schedules against union regulations. They are being reprimanded for not working hard enough and completing tasks that are beyond the scope of their position. I believe that this is to remove the more highly paid employees with schedules earned by seniority. Older employees also need more health coverage.
If you feel that you are a victim of this type of discriminatory practice let me know.

Now please remember that the union consists of you and the other workers. if you lety it happen and do not push back then you deserve what you get. I have a manager , at 488 in McKinney texas, that wants to run it like a wal-mart. The things you are talking about, he is trying here. Local 1000 has several grivances against him and I , in local540, do also. One thing you may want to do is push your local union and stay on them. If they do not get back right a way then email the UFCW in washington and you will get a responce back. Management has tried to alter our shedual and had to pay us hourd back. I have had almost a dozen right-ups in the 8 months that our manager ( Mr Kro-Mart) has been there and the only way to deal with people , like that, is to fight back. I can write my own grievances and file them as the shop steward and plan to start doing it this week and get the attention of my local and HR to solve the problems.

If you could speak to the former employees that feel that Koger has forced out after long and unblemished service and would be willing to share their experiences it would be very helpful to me. I am currently exploring the possibility of a civil court action against Krogers and could use back up data. This action should be backed by the union but I don't believe they are active or aggressive enough on our behalf.

Damn, in our store if you have 10 years or more they turn a blind eye and never expect performance they expect from new hires. And god bless your sole if your in the 30 day probation period. They really $hit all over you.

We got a fat bastard U-Scan(watcher) that darn near falls asleep every night. And he gets 5 hours ot each week. He's been there 41 years. You think they'd make him open up a register and check someone out at the rate the other cashiers are held to? Hell no.

Do know that in my store, We will ride new hires( meat department) hard for the first 90 days of their probation period. But as hard as it is to get people hired, it is more a piont of trying to get people into a possition to do something right and not be as short handed. As far as us old goats, the last two contracts (and this one comming up, I believe) gave people with 10 years of service a guaranteed 40 hours a week.

I am a csm at kroger, I am 21 years old and have a lot of older ppl under me, for some reason, they all feel that because they have so many years at the store, they deserve special consideration,,,,,well they don't, unless they work for it so old people out there, get the hell over it and do your damn job

The people that have long years of service at the minimum deserve your respect. Apparently, that's something you don't have for anyone. I'll be forwarding your response to your district HR. Grow up and get overyourself shug, your life will be easier if you behave with some courtesy, humility, and grace.

If you really are a CSM and feel that way I feel sorry for you. Those "old people" have kept your customers happy for years, and you need to show your apperciation.

Kroger has been around a long time, and people continue to shop there because of the people who work there. I know the names of many of my customers, but they also remember when person x and y worked in a totally different department. They remember the day our store opened. They can name the children of the first CSM who managed the front end.

They remember when the "old" people were young.

Of course they are! It is all about the bottom line."Our People are Great!" is B.S., more like "Our Leadership is Great!". Kroger doesn't need critical thinkers or the need to develop people. Key Retailing is "put everything away where the sign says" and "let CAO do the ordering with minimal adjustments"., ELMS is nothing more than schedule what we tell you to and  continue to complete the ridiculous checklists that do nothing more than provide job justification in the Office...and all will be well! As long as they believe ...stock price says something different.
The current rhetoric of "offering competitive wages and total benefit package" is sheer nonsense trying to get YOU to believe it is. And don't you think for one second when the new health care reform kicks in Kroger will be the first to drop health and welfare. There quick to write what they spend in health care (and there are more efficient and better choice plans out there but you know Kroger! Somebody at the top is probably invested with the provider!) You do the math = spend 3 billion in Health care that Kroger claims or get penalized by Uncle Sam $180 for each person not covered.

I do not know whare you work but Find be a person ( in dallas area?) that is 18 to 21 years old and wants to work in the meat department and I would love to have them. That is the lazyest group of workers in the area. If you think that older workers are not nessessary then fine for you but then enjoy trying to teach kids work ethics. Sure as hell their perants don`t seem to do that.

Elms is to be a bible that they are preaching but when pushed for an answer, out human reasorce department , in houston, stated it is only a guidline for management to use should they want to.

Now as far as dropping the insurance , the company can not do that without negociating it in the contract.

Also consider that the price of the total cost of the benifitts is close to $6 per hour on our contract in Dallas. So to see the true cost of what you pay is, you have to take the pay rate and ad that to it in order to find what they are paying you.

Well... Why don't you leave the "old people" ALONE so they can get THEIR job,  NOT your job done! Also you DO NOT really need bonuses. Give the workers a much DESERVED raise. You can only do so much in hours given. So, on that note, get your 21 year old head out of your ass, and ler the "old guys" do THEIR job.

A store manager tried to fire me from store 933.  She didn't win and being the only non minority in the dept. I can cry racism.  By the grace of god and our Union and HR I was given a transfer and my last two PED's have been nothing but outstanding with the highest scores.  I now work in a store that takes care of customers and it's employees.

And she went to another store and has had bad store visits from the old Zone manager and new Zone manager.  I'm not surprised.

Oh lord.

It's ironic then, if she's racist towards non minorities....she's in a 95% white store. Our store visits have not been that bad though, although he has been around a lot lately so i guess we don't hear all of what he's saying.

This makes sense though on why she's so tight with a certain person in my store... nothing against this employee because i love her to death and it's not like she's purposely using her race for any gain, but i see why she sides with her so much now. omg.

i hope no one from my store sees this, i'm sure they can figure out who i am if they see this...

She was tight with everyone in her old store.  Co-managers, her, and heads going out drinking.  I'm sure a new store will change someone though.  She will also take a Dept head's word like it's the bible.  "why aren't we looking good" dept. head, it's everyone elses fault, everyone elses fault, boo who who who.  Oh does she still talk on her cell phone on the sales floor/perimeter?

I haven't noticed it too much. some, but not to the point that it annoys me. i actually haven't had any problems with her at all. then again, we've had some not so good managers, and she actually seems pretty laid back. maybe the change of stores has mellowed her out?

i think a lot of people hate coming here because it's so far away from where they live. so we've actually seen worse people. two of our co's are very nice guys right now but the other new one is a cranky old guy who's just ready to retire.

Let's see, you posted in May of 2010 when you were a smart aleck 21 year old thinking you knew everything.  It's 2020 now, so you are about 31 years old now.  Are you still the "Golden Child" lol?  Are you even with Kroger any more?  Did you "whine" as you accused others of doing when Kroger pushed you aside?
