this happens a lot more than you think. really what you need to do is probably put it in writing or talk to your store manager saying that you'd like to be trained to cashier. First they'll just train you and maybe you'll cashier a couple times a week but once you get the swing of it, I'm sure down the road they will need you and you can get bumped. I've seen some really lousy workers be trained as cashiers, so unless there's something you're not telling us, I don't see any reason they wouldn't let you. Good luck and enjoy getting raises and insurance if you become one! If you try putting it in writing and they still don't let you, maybe it's time to contact your union rep and discuss the matter with him or her just to see what your rights are, maybe you could transfer to deli or grocery or something...anything but bagging!

The best way to get trained as a cashier (that is , if you are over 18) is to show superior customer service, be very good at the job you have now so that they will say. "wow, that person would make a great cashier". But if you do not smile, engage and thank the customer and are a slow bagger, they have no reason to spend training hours on you. Also, learn all the main codes for produce to you can help your cashier (team player) and they will see that you are motivated to be a team player.

As my mother always said, Act like you already have the job and they will give it to you.

i.e. learn the produce codes, treat customers well, watch the cashier so you know how to deal with coupons, WIC, voids, price checks, suspending orders etc.

When they see you already know most of what you need to know and how little training you would require, trust me, they will WANT you as a cashier.

Most of our courtesy clerks become checkers on the weekends when everyone calls in. Make sure you work weekends.

i work in grocery and i've thought about getting trained to cashier.  Trouble is when they call customer first I'll go up and bag (now) but if I knew how to check they'd be pulling me off my job more often and that makes some people mad.

I work at krogers as-well. As a bagger. I've been there for almost 45 days now. I have got the full-swing of things and with my speed and awesome 'customer service with a smile' attitude I quickly became a star front-end employee. With ever co-worker loving me and knowing my name. for the past 2 or 3 weeks, one of my general supervisors' has kept telling me to go talk to my supervisor about getting pushed up to checker(since I'm 17 and not 16). I know I can be pushed up at 17 because I have a friend who is 17 nd got pushed up to checker. All within code. But, today, I talked to my HEAD-SUPERVISOR. she told me that people in my position usually stay ont he bagging end for atleast 6 months. (seeing as your a top-notch employee) then more chances become open to you. She told me that she knows how bad I want to get up there and learn the way it works so she would keep her ears open for me. It also helps that I get out of school at 1:13 for Co-op. So I have an 8 hour time zone for week-days and a open field for weekend and holidays.

Just make yourself known to the people above you. Let them see you working your ass off and interacting with everyone.
