Absolutely no hours!

So is there a policy against having 0 hours in a week as a part time Cashier? So I went into work today to check our schedule and found out that 5 people had 0 hours on the schedule, including myself. Is there something that I can do about this? It just doesn't seem right

if you didn't recieve a lay off notice, you cannot rightfully be laid off (meaning you got 0 hours.) You can grieve, but only by the saturday before the schedule starts, BY NOON. After that, you have no right to hours. You have to make a note explaining that you have no hours and didn't get a layoff notice, make three copies, give one to a manager, one to your rep, then keep one for yourself. (Sign and date them, it also wouldn't hurt to put down the time, either.) If your manager does not change your schedule by noon on the saturday before the schedule starts, he/she cannot rightfully change it at all. If this happens (but rarely is a manager stupid enough not to change it) you have the right to take 12 hours of pay w/o work!  If the schedule is not changed, talk to your union rep about a grievance form. The managers are forced to give your 12 hours of pay when you turn in this grievance, BUT only if they didn't change the schedule on time.

Check your contract. Everyone at our store has to be scheduled at least 15 hours. It's in the contract.

some cashiers only got 8 or less. i got 12, which is a drastic jump from having 32 the week prior. i'm a teenager in college, and having only 12 hours is probably better so i can study more. what makes me upset is that there are part time cashiers who LIVE off their paychecks and need those hours, so cutting them down from 32-40 all the way down to 18-24 really isn't fair.

To the original poster: we must work in the same store otherwise it's a freakish coincidence that is happening to me too. ( I work in the Columbus Division) Last week 9(!) cashiers had zero hours and this week five or six had zero hours. The ones that got some hours are 12 or less. Someone got four hours for the week. As far as I can tell we don't have anything prohibiting zero hours in our contract. I know cashiers are fuming and want to go to the union, but are hesitant because our store  is on shaky ground.
