Department head opening
Permalink

The department head in the department I'm in has decided to transfer to another store after being there for several years. The position was posted last week and the only person who has put in for it is from another store, has never worked in this particular department, and has been with Kroger for less than a year. The people who are qualified for the job don't want it because of all the hassles, mainly key retailing. What do they usually do in this type of situation?

Would probably help if you listed the specific department.

Head Cashier, Grocery, Produce, Deli and Meat usually have backups who must bid on the jobs once they come open or resign from the backup if they decide not to sign.  Head Dairy and Head Frozen food have appointed backups that anyone can sign for and File Maintenance is an appointed position.

Could be different from zone to zone though.

Have you taken the Successor training for Dept management? If not then you'll probably lose out to someone who has. Find the dept management brochure, fill it out and turn it in. Maybe next time you'll have a better chance.

Uhm, where in the OP's message did he/she say that they wanted the job?

Drew, your advice conflicts with how things are handled in the store I work at. I know for a fact that the backup is not let go if they do not want to be department head. Our Night Grocery Manager passed on the position three times before finally accepting it, and he was never relieved of being department backup.

If a backup does not want to be manager, they cannot force them to. And they certainly cannot punish them for it. However, it is up to management if they do not want you to be backup anymore. If they think you aren't committed enough and don't do the job well enough, they can relieve you of the position. They don't even have to assign a replacement.

In the event that they cannot find a manager to fill the position, what generally happens in our Zone, is that the Backup runs the department till they can. Sometimes they will bring in a manager from another store to run it temporarily, and their backup takes over at their store while they are gone.

For the Deli in my zone, we are constantly short on Deli managers. They often take what they can get. Even if it means hiring in someone with no experience and very little time in the work force. Nobody wants to put up with Kroger's **** anymore. The pay just isn't worth the stress.

In my district, they won't let you transfer to another store until your position can be replaced. Happened to me, I went for a Head Grocery opening at another store. I was told that I could not leave my store until a suitable replacement for my position (Grocery backup - night crew leader) was found.

I didn't get the position... I will never really know if it was because I was "unavailable" or not.

Head nights is also a department head position that has an appointed backup that anyone can sign for.

I've only seen one instance of somebody resigning in a backup position.  Our head grocery manager died suddenly from an aneurysm and the backup wouldn't take the job and ultimately resigned.  The backups have first priority over the job and nobody signed it, so it ultimately went to the person who had the highest seniority.  If a backup at another store signs for it, they would get it even if the person who signed wasn't a backup but had more tenure.  The former backup ended up bumping into DSD and has been there ever since.

That's why I said it varies from zone to zone.
