is it worth it...

OK so by now most of you know that I am a back-up.  I make $14.80/hr. i recently was transferred to a store father away from my home.  it takes about 25 min to go there then another 25 min to get home.  gas - maybe a gallon a way.

OK so - I would make $13.40/hr just to be a clerk.  Maybe I could relocate to a store closer to my home.  i make $12/day more to manage.  Is it worth it under these circumstances?

Nothing personal towards kroger on this one but I'm not getting paid much more for the job....

Just wondering what you all think?  i typed up my voluntary demotion letter just for kicks LOL

just look at it this way - it could be worse. 25mins isn't THAT far of a commute. Just try to get transferred to a closer store and enjoy the little extra money you're getting for it :)

My neighbor traveled 88 miles one way after the strike to another store to work just to keep his full time.

I live 20 minutes from the Kroger I work at and believe me, I would transfer closer if we had one here.  Only problem is, all are about the same distance.

But here's one I'm considering, Sams Club hires meat cutters at $10-$11 an hour.  By comparison, I'm barely making $9.  There is a Sams about five minutes from my house.  Would that be worth trying to make the jump?  I've heard there is high turnover though.

isn't sams club using the same union as kroger? If you can get a better paying job closer why would you hesitate?

Sams Club is actually owned by Walmart.  Therefore, not union.

ah, then they may not hire you if they find out weither you're pro-union or not. Tread lightly. At least you're male! Walmart hates women! xD

AH Wal Mart.. They didn't offer vision care when I worked for them 10 years ago. Their reason? "Too many people need glasses." Yes, that was the honest to god reason I was given when I asked.

I wouldn't work for a Wal-Mart again even if they offered me $50 an hour.

Sam's Club is actually a very good move. They are strongly positioned, have fared well with the dive bombing economy, and yes, you can make decent wages there. One reason for the fast turn-over (at least from what I've seen in my area) is because they absolutely DRIVE their employees---I don't mean like slaves, but many younger people have a much softer work ethic these days.

Is Sam's interests you, I would strongly suggest checking into it.

I personally am done working the "big box" retail industry.  Got tired of all the concrete, steel beam shelves, dust and noise, forklifts, walking 2 miles to get across the place.  Reminds me now of "Employee of the Month".  Found the grocery industry to be a lot more tame.

i'm sure for some the Big Boxes are a lovely place to work.  Go for it.  it's just ot for me

Cool; I understand. In light of my past posts, this next will seem even more bizaar in the extreme...but I used to be a psych counsellor. I've been in big box retail nearly ever since, and I certainly would not have believed it'd have been this long; life has a curious way about it. That said, have you actively researched your other options? Breaking things down, you're a family man of a non adolescent age with mounting bills to pay and probably not a lot of time, money---or realistic financial assistance to feasibly look at a college education. Which is all the well, since they keep jacking up tuition fees higher than Jupiter ever year any way.

How's your interest in welding? Air conditioning/heating? Truck driving? I'm listing these venues as things I myself am actively considering. What ever you decide, Dude, and however things turn out in the long run.....we're all behind you.
