1) yes we get paid on a weekly basis 2) It consists of general base knowledge that you'll need to preform your job. Depending on what job you're accepted for. For example: i'm a bagger - mine consisted of learning to lift properly, use a box cutter, how to mop, when to use spill magic vs dry cloths, how things should be put in bags, why meat and fish should not be bagged together, ect. 3) you recieve a kroger brain washing, fill out paper work, have a chance to ask questions, and do computer training. Don't worry it's not too extreme. 4) as part time you get insurance after 18 months and a 5% discount on kroger brand items via your plus card. 5) a safety net. Just think of it like that

First impressions are EVERYTHING you want managers and coworkers to know you are BOTH friendly and hard-working.
You WILL be frustrated about everything. Don't let it get to you.
THE BIG ONE If you are going to miss a day of work always call in 2 hrs before your shift. People who miss work and don't call in are No Call No Show (NCNS) and depending on your contract, that is the easiest way to get in trouble and lose your job. I can't stress this one enough.
Unemployment? you will never get it from working here. If you do lose your job, you will never be terminated (fired), you will be "indefinitely suspended" which is just a fancy way of saying "no unemployment for you"
YES YOU GET A 10% DISCOUNT...YES YOU GET PAID EVERY WEEK....COMPUTER TRAINING????? As part of a union you receive a load of benefits, and job security. A Union is the best way to ensure your position and fair treatment from your employer.
The fees are for a group to manage your work environment, pay, health benefits, and ensure you a fair employment opportunity.
Look at all big companies since Unions were formed there goal is to dissolve all unions. Why you ask, well without a management company (so to speak) to ensure your rights you'll end up like the employees of Wall-Mart. The health benefits for there employees is to go on welfare no Union, the lowest paid employees for a company that makes Billions per quarter in profit, no Union = companies can treat you like a slave.
If every job in the US was a Union position we as a whole would be better. If you had a job that you worked normal shifts, made enough to live on (not check to check), vacation time, more time for family, and a better quality of life. You would have Union jobs.
I went through three days of training. One was general orientation, which included a lot of computer work. The other two were for cashier training. Even though I have done cashiering for quite a few years, the training was extremely useful.
When I was hired about three years back, we skipped computer training entirely.
The orientation isn't much. The union guy comes in first and tries to get everyone to sign up. Then, you sign away your photo rights and they talk up weird random benefits like Sprint discounts to get you all psyched up.
If you work there long enough, you may or may not have the option for health insurance if you get enough hours. In my division, the employee discount is 10% on store brand products and on seemingly random general merchandise items. Occasionally there are promotions such as double fuel points and such, but if you only work for Kroger part time, you probably won't be able to afford a car.
The union are a bunch of guys who subtract $400-700 a year directly from your paycheck in order to buy fancy chairs to sleep in at their offices. This is a hell of a lot of money for someone making minimum wage. If you need their help, you need to interrupt their naptime. And if you interrupt naptime, they will tell you just to quit so you don't bother them anymore. The time for action was a decades ago. The union is toothless and complacent. Kroger is the 4th worst paying corporation in America and every contract is worse. You'd be better off with a company that respects their employees. Costco employees get massively better pay and benefits and don't need a union.
We only get 5% once a week off the total grocery sum. :( So you have to be careful when you use it.

We haven't had that discount since February of last year I think (Delta division). We switched to 10% on all Kroger brand items.
I'm glad we switched off of that old system. That was annoying to have to coordinate one large purchase a week when I'm used to buying a few things almost daily.
My teenager was just hired and starts next week. I'm curious if the 5-10% is something part-time employees are eligible for and if they get it immediately upon hire? I'm sure the employee has to "be there" when the purchase is made, but I'm wondering if since i'm the grocery buyer if there is any issue with being able to do my shopping and then (with them there) use the discount?
Also curious about the union situation... What is the "worst case scenario" should the employee chose not to participate? I'm not looking for a discourse on the pros or cons of a union in general - I'm well-versed in that, I'm just curious at a practical level how many employees choose not to participate and what direct effect (if any) they've experienced. In my experience there is a great deal of bullying related to joining the union - so there's certainly a personal aspect, but is there a material difference for the employee?
Actually the employee doesn't have to be with you as long as it's immediate family that lives in the household using it. I got my discount pretty quick after being hired. And yes, everyone who works here gets the discount. :)
As far as the union, that depends on your state. In some states (like Ohio) you have to be a member of the union to work at Kroger. So I can't really answer that for you.

Yeah, participation in the Union is a state by state thing

I have been with kroger since 2008. You do not have to join the unioun, but the only thing is if something were to go wrong, the union, would be the one to help you save your job. I have been with Kroger for 7 years now and still only make 8.50 an hour so id say the pay is not that great. I wouldn't join the Union if I was you because they charge way too much money, and they barely pay us any in the first place. Vacation pay starts after 1 year. 10% discount on kroger items is loaded onto your kroger card and only people who live with the employee can use it. Never use it for anyone else because that is grounds for automatic termination. You must be a team player, kroger can be a great place to work as long as you work hard and you play well with others. Also, you must have patience, Kroger attracts a lot of rude customers and the customer is always right, so patience is key.

Everything you said varies by state and division, so it's no use stating things as universal fact.
The Kroger Company is not a place to work. I've been at Kroger for 13years. And they have taken away a lot of benefits and more to come this contract is so to be over. More then likely we will have to get are on insurance. This use to be a career job but not anymore. The mangers will ball face lie to your face and stub you in the back as you walk off I would not let me kids work at this place and get treated the why we do in the Delta area of Arkansas just watch your back they are not for there employees anymore.

RE: I am a new Kroger employee. have some questions.
It seems to me if the union had been working so hard on workers to be treated well and as long as the union has been apart of kroger. They wouldnt have a minimum start wage. Seems the best way to gain workers trust is on day 1 when you tell a new worker they make more right out of the gate because the union cared from the beginning and put this in place for you. Seems somone is drinking coffee and sleeping on the workers dime
2 "modules", or whatever they choose to call it this month. you log into the system in the computer room (no where else) and observe training material, then electronically sign for having done it. sometimes they try to improve the material but it is mostly for showing to a civil court jury after you have been injured or killed.
3 can be anything from insanely bizarre company propaganda, training, interrogation about your entire personal life and they may just decide to skip it all.
4 probably not but it does not hurt to ask.
5 depending on the contract the company asked the union to give everybody the union will collectively bargain on your behalf any way the company wants, then provide valuable benefits.
Kroger is one of the worst companies in the world and you can do better.
