Kroger's unfair wage policy
Permalink

Hello all,

I work in a Cincinnati store, I was due my first wage increase the first of this month, it never came so I was told to call HR.  HR told me that since min wage went up in Ohio the first of the year (a month before my raise was due) that Kroger counted the wage increase as my raise and my next raise will also be voided because that would have brought me to what the min wage increase was.  So technically someone who starts months after me will be making more then I do since they will be getting their raises while I have to wait until my wage iincreases catch up to min wage.  I attempted to call the union but they never returned my call as always.

How can Kroger do this?  I'll be working at Kroger a year before getting my first true raise, 10 cents over min. wage.

Start off at minimum wage, get stuck on part time for years, get 0 hours on non peak seasons with no benefits; when hours do become available, get bumped over by long term don't give a sht jag-offs with seniority, and all the while pay handsomely for these privileges......Kroger's union is awesome!

In all essence you did get your raise. I have had this happen to me 5 times in my life time. Three times when I started at Kroger. hat you failed to understand that you are in an entry level position. It is not just kroger but most all Retail in general. If you think you are going to make a lot of money and a living in retail then you need to stick with the job for a longer haul than just one pay scale jump.

You can blame Kroger all you want but it is not just them. I can tell you like I tell all the ones that complain they do not pay me enough. Go find a job else where. Given time and getting a full time position and you will make a competitive rate compared to any other retain in your area. There is not a company alive that will set a pay scale and then give everyone a cost of living adjustment , across the board, equal to the increase of the minimum wage increase.

Here is one thing to think about. If a company set a goal of , lets say a 5% increase in sales and business then they are not going to offer more that 5% increase for any pay or benefits. Until the next union contract comes up , the issue is a mute point. Both sides was aware of this when the contract was talked about, I am sure it was built into the pay structure. I have seen that happen once on contract talks before.

Here is another thing to consider. The company has an average pay rate that they use. They take the total number of hours for all pay role and divide it by the total dollars of pay roll. In our case , Dallas meat clerks, it comes out to about $11 per hour. Now figure in the cost of all your benefits and you can ad another $6 an hour that does not come out of your check but paid by the company. Now if minimum wage was to go up a $1 an hour and they are to give you that pay across the board, then you are getting your benefits cut right away. The money is negotiated , by bot sides and a set amount. The company will only pay the set amount. If you want the increase in pay then your benefits are cut. If the cost of Health care goes up more than both sides agree on, then the difference is coming out of your benefits. That is not just Kroger but all retail and probably all companies.

What you are learning is one of life's early lessons. You can blame Kroger all you want but it is not just them but most all companies that you may ever work for in your life.

in my opinion you need to call your union rep. ask your co-workers who you need to talk to. figure out what what you are going to tell your union rep before you make the call. sometimes its not what you say, but how you say it.

grumpy has some good points, but why settle for less if there is a chance you can get more out of your job.

This happened to me during the time when minumum wage was being raised each year.  They counted it as my raise, so all I did was make minimum wage.  Eventually I made it out of the loop and now I make a few dollars over minimum wage.  When that happened, I got retro pay/back pay on my next check.

Your union rep is busy trying to get fast food workers 15 bucks a hour

I only make 7.65 an hour so far at kroger in south carolina. I am in college and got to full-time status already. if you stay at least 5 years, you will be vested so whatever is in your 401k can be rolled to a different retirement account. So if my pay stays sucky, i can still be getting a degree and if things don't improve in 5 years, I have a head start on retirement when I get a better job, and kroger helped pay my bills while in college. Hell I may even keep it 1 day a week if i establish a better career to keep feeding money into their 401k while also having another retirement account on the side with my new job. Alot of it is planning.

$7.65? You rich bastard, as a courtesy clerk I make $7.25 an hour and have an amazing 16 hours this week. Had 11 last week.
According to Kroger, I'd need to bag for two years to get a meager 15 cent raise.
Yea. Like that will happen.

If you get a desk job with a 401K option making, say, $35,000 a year in salary, then you'll quit Kroger before long. Working 6 days a week is not a way to live.

35,000 a year salary? If you graduate college and start off making $35,000 you just wasted a **** load of money on that degree. If you don't like the unIon or your pay go to school and go into management. From what I've seen Kroger has a little bit of everything as long as you have a basic degree.

Depends on where you live. In California $35k gets you nowhere, but here, i wouldn't complain if i got a job that started at $35k!

11 hours?? Serious? What is the bare minimum you can work as a cc?

our cc's woke a minimum of 16 hrs a week. Sometimes they are scheduled less than the minimum. So they "take" the hours left to total out to the 16.

No. Union dues stay the same. You need to check your tax deductions.

You must be part of management since Kroger only gives associates a 5 cent laughable wage increase per 6 months service. Minimum wage hikes will far surpass the 10 cent yearly increase and inflation will more than eat that up..

Kroger has no problem throwing away perfectly good food into the dumpsters on a daily basis (hundreds of dollars worth a day) but won't even let their associates have a free lunch from it despite the slave wage status... but hey,  it's the free market system and that's best for everyone concerned.

Sorry I come from a company that paid .50 to .75 cent raise every 600 to 1200 hours you worked and when you get close to maxing out say you are at 12 and the max is 15 your next raise they max you out and this is with medical, dential, and eye Benifiets so kroger has no excuse
