Nursing....Have you applied for a CNA position, or as an aid working in a psych unit? I know for a fact you'd be a shoe-in with your double majors.

There's also Growing Strong ( a nat'l organization for womens' abuse), and Catholic charities; there are any number of other jobs you could try for that are more suited to your curriculum.

I started working at Kroger exactly one week ago. I hate it here. More specifically, I hate my job.

To begin with, I wanted to work part-time. I have one day off this next week. I applied for a cashier position, since I have experience and am a "people person", and they stuck me in produce.

I'm 5' tall, weigh 110lbs soaking wet, and have to use a step stool to do anything. The men back there feel the need to help me lift things, then resent me for it. They get pissy with me when there's a ton of trash, but I don't have a key to the back door, and nobody seems to be able to be bothered to help.

I've been asking a ton of questions, trying to figure this crap job out, and either I get the death stare or a different answer from everybody. I have no clue what I'm supposed to be doing when I clock in, so all I know to do is ask my manager what I should be doing, and it's making him crazy. When I try to be autonomous, I get told not to do whatever I'm doing.

The dullards that work in the produce department are always at everybody's throat, and I get so tired of hearing the crap talking about everybody else. I've even walked in on it being about me several times, although the store manager keeps telling me how awesome I'm doing and to keep it up.

I don't know what to do. I don't want to work in the crappy produce department. I'm so short, I can't even reach the handle to the baler without jumping, which has got to be unsafe. I'm thinking I would gladly let a man or woman who needs this job have it. I'm so distraught.

Well, though, it's not just a job. It takes up 6 days of my week, which can't happen this fall because I'm a full-time bachelors level nursing and medical sociology student as well. I just took a semester off because I needed to do so. My cuticles are bloody and raw from ripping the boxes open (nope! no knives! I find this part to be hysterical...), and I'm bruised everywhere so bad that it looks like someone took a giant club to my tiny body. So it follows me home. I couldn't even enjoy my day off because I'm dreading going back in tomorrow. It's not a bad company, and this isn't a bad job. This is just not a job I can physically do and remain healthy or even somewhat sane. I asked HR if I'll be trained on the front end, and all she said was sometime in the next few weeks, but I'm not sure I can last that long.

You are a pig, anonymous. This is exactly what I'm talking about when I speak of "dullards" in the store. Your terrible grammar tells me that you're fine right where you are, sugar. Stay in retail. You have no hope elsewhere, and that's kind of sad.

Thank you, nocturnia for an intelligible response. I'm actually an emergency responder suffering from a BAD case of burnout. I've worked weekend night shift runs for the last four years. It doesn't get more real than that. The tragedy never stops, and you become cynical and cold after awhile. I'm going in tomorrow, but I'm holding the show up until I get some answers from someone who knows their ass from a hole in the ground, if that even exists.

Well back in the day you had to be suited to the position that was open. I.E. a bagger had to be able to lift 80# of pellet salt to be a bagger. And common sense(which unfortunately isn't very common anymore at the store) woulda told the manager to use you as a cashier. But nowadays it's so hard to hire a live, reliable, and honest body that if u have a pulse and pass drug screen then ur hired. U need to operate and think like a robot especially in produce to be of value.

So they slotted u where they had the opening and were in dire need of a body. No big surprise that the rest of ur "team" isn't very cordial- they've prolly seen a lot of newbies come and go and figure ur just another temp they have to deal with. Like the one person said u'd be better off being a CNA at a nursing home or such. As with every cloud there is a silver lining when u get to work at the psych ward u'll have advance knowledge as to why there's an abundance of ex long term Kroger mgmt/workers there!

littlelake, when you sat down with the store's HR person for your interview, where you supposed to go and how much you were being paid should have been spelled out to you.  If you're in produce then you should have a box cutter. Ask for one.

We have plenty of people that work up front with two jobs or they are going to school. Kroger does'nt make it easy. The reason most people quit is that Kroger hours begin to infringe on your other work/school hours. The scheduler often makes mistakes.

If you wanted to be a cashier then I don't even know why they would call you if the cashier position was not available.

By the way if you're looking for an easy job at Kroger then cashiering isn't it. Depending on how busy your store is you're ringing and helping bag 4 to 8 hours. On your feet, being timed for speed and lifting dog food, cases of bottled water, 24 pack beer and then bagging it if you have no bagger. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Talk to the person who hired or trained you and ask them why they put you in produce.  As badly as Kroger needs cashiers, I can't believe they would pass up the opportunity of having someone who actually wants to be a cashier.  If they refuse to move you then quit and apply at one of their competitors.

Even part-timers aren't allowed to work more than 5 days a week, are you sure the person who put the schedule in the computer didn't just goof up? Happens constantly at my store unfortunately.

Ckeck your contract . Most contracts will state a six day pay of time and a half. It will also state the company has the right to ( in some effect ) work employees 6 days in a week. The idea of the 6 day pay is to prevent companies from stretching 40 hours over 3 or 7 days and not paying any overtime.

Stop being a jerk! I wish I had the admin powers to ban you. You are an inbread dullard. And I do not like the word "dullard". But in this case I have to tell you like it is. You were born in a stall at Kroger. Your mama never told anyone she was pregnant. She was too ashamed that your daddy was her brother.

And I dare you call someone a midget. I like short girls. I am almost 6 foot and I think short girls are cool. Now leave her alone before I hack the admin and ban you.
