Temporary layoff, what to expect?

Our bakery used to close at 8, which is why they put me there.  My available hours when I was hired were 8 am to 8 pm, so it worked perfectly.  Well they decided that from now on they're going to be open til 10 and they started scheduling me that way.  I told them I couldn't stay til 10 pm and that it conflicted with my availability.  Well, the bakery head got mad and started saying it was unfair to the rest of the workers if I didn't close too. I said it was unfair to me to schedule me for hours when I can't work.

She got mad and surprise! on the next schedule I had no hours.  She said it was a temporary layoff, but I've been off for a month and a half now.  How long do these usually last?

if you're availability is restricted then you are not guaranteed any hours what-so-ever. Request to be moved to another department with an official request of transfer or find another job.

She's hoping you'll just quit.

What's your seniority status?  Also, does she work at least one night till 10 pm?  Another thing, why are you waiting this late to say anything about it?

I've been there for 8 years.  She generally gets off at 5, sometimes on rare occasions she stays til 8. I've never seen her on the schedule work til 10.  I contacted my union about it and they set up a meeting for me.  It was supposed to be a week ago but the union rep got sick and had to reschedule.

I'm in bakery and we close at 9.

My department manager works until 9 one night a week.
I work 4-5 nights a week until 9 usually.
There's usually only one other person who stays until 9 on nights I don't work, unless she's unavailable, then the person with the next most seniority works it.

Our morning baker #1 only works until 9 on the day of a week our manager is on vacation.
Morning baker #2 hasn't worked until 9 for months now.

So why would you HAVE to be scheduled to close? Sounds like she just wants a reason for you to quit :(

Are you really unavailable?

Even if you aren't, seniority should still prevail if your schedule is still open like that.

What is your seniority compared to the other associates in your department.

I wouldn't be surprised.  Other people in my department with less seniority don't have to close, there's a woman in our department who only works day shift and has never closed.

I think I'm 5th in line when it comes to seniority.  There are two ladies who have been working there for 10 years (one of those two women only works nightshift by her choice), one person been working there for 9, and one was hired in the same year I was a few weeks before me. We have about 7 other people in the department and they all have less seniority.

You should be able to work 12-8 or4- 8. Their is no reason why they would lay you off. Lay off is only if their is no hours.

Well, don't hold your breath. My best advice is to start looking for a new job, 'cause some crazy woman might come out of no where and ruin your life anyway.
