United Way?

My store manager called me in to his office today, giving me this whole spiel about donating part of my ($7.75/wk) paycheck to the United Way, he had a form with my name on it and everything. I told him I can't donate this year, he grudgingly accepted and I had to put a zero in the amount box and sign it. Is this a normal Kroger thing or only in certain stores? I don't recall doing the same last year, and it just felt quite rude and pushy.

I think most divisions do it, if not all of them. Just how rude and pushy they are varies tho.

I was "hounded" on it. And pressured as well. Finally I asked "why should I? I have other things I want to use my money for." I admit that could have been said better.

My manager's response? " why WOULDNT you?! Don't YOU have work you need to do now?!?" He dismisses me. Turns out no one was really interested in donating and that pissed him off

We do it too, no one in the produce department gave em anything.  Managers only made a stink about the forms being filled out.

yeah i was pulled into the manager's office and pressured to donate. i even tried to say i'll get this paper back to you but they wouldn't let me go back to the floor without an answer while i tried to find a charity i might donate to.  then even after i'd agreed to donate i was hounded later because the manager forgot.

tbh with what i'm paid charity begins at home and i could use that money for food or gas or new socks.

While working as cashier with Stuff The Bus, MDA, Hunger Bags etc.  I feel like asking for and getting donations (in addition to my other job duties) for 25 to 35 hours a week is giving enough.

What does United Way even support? I'm not donating to a charity that I know nothing about.

United way does a bunch of different charities and the form say what the each different charity does.  They are legit, but between medical and dues, Im not giving away more money.

It might be a good charity, but i wouldn't donate part of my paycheck every week to it. If i want to donate, i'll do it when I want to.

Agreed. And if the store don't make its quota? So what?
Getting donations is NOT a "competition" between stores. You should donate ONLY if YOU want to. NOT because you are pressured into it.

When I was hourly, working part time hours and making minimum wage, I would fire right back: "Hey, I'M a charity case too. Where's MY check?" That shut 'em up. Quick.

We only had one of the co-managers ask us if we wanted to donate or not. No pressuring or anything.

Though, that was a year ago. They may get more pushy this year. xD

That's pretty poetic. A few people in my store have actually asked management for donations with a straight face. They never got any money, but management never yelled either.

Management is hounding you guys because the Zone Managers make it a pet project to beat the other zones to suck up to the executive group, and give each store a quota (goal isn't the right word for it). As such, management gets to pressure you guys into donating to make the quota.

That works the opposite with me. All hounding me does is get me more and more pissed off until both me and the person hounding gets really pissed off with each other

I heard if they meet a certain quota, they get a bonus so of course they will be pushy.

But why do WE get out of it... Besides being hounded and bitched at by pissed off managers if we say No?

You get nothing, and you'll like it. Isn't that the Kroger way?
