I want to get out of the deli

What can I do? I see other people getting moved to the bakery, Donatos, or Starbucks (which are in the deli/bakery area so they take their workers from our shared pool of workers.) But no matter what I do, they won't move me. I'm a good worker and I've been there longer than most people, but whenever I ask they just say "we need you in the deli." I'm sick of the deli.

He's right.

Being that "good worker" to them translates as "bending over backwards at their own command".

People are moved out of departments when they can't "cut it". They'll also us BS excuses and pity statements like "you're doing such a good job" or "but we really need you there" to keep you there.

I once asked for a move, and I was moved to another department that was just as busy as my previous one. My friend who was hired the same time as I was moved to the front after maybe four weeks.

It took my months to be moved to the front so I can get a more negotiable schedule. And it wasn't because I was busting my ass for them or because I asked. I was moved since there was grocery night crew drama and they moved one of the guys to day stock and gave him my hours/shifts.

You are the first person I've met that actually asked to be moved up front. Usually people are thrown there as a punishment.

Supposedly, the partnership started in '04.

Because as a college student, I'd rather spend more time studying than working a dead-end job (no offense to my co-workers).

We get in trouble for not finishing all tasks expected of us in a shift. I understand that. But being expected to do eight hours of work within four (which was my schedule then during my tenures in Nutrition, Dairy, and Grocery) is VERY unreasonable. Now, wanting to be moved to the front end isn't because I'm lazy. There's a reason why they didn't want to move me, because I can actually put a dent in the stacks of totes and pallets we have in receiving instead of being that "dead weight" or "that slow guy".

Besides. I'm still paid the same wherever I'm at, except for meat department. Actually, I'm paid .25 more than half the people in the front end because of a terribly executed contract (went from 7.35 to 7.70 in only three months) while everyone else who have equal or lesser seniority are stuck at 7.25/7.45.

Also, the FES is understanding, as I've described before. Very easy to communicate with, and he's very clear about his decisions, especially when it comes to negotiating schedules to make way for everyone's important events.

All of that stuff I mentioned, for half the labor I've done in the other departments. Really. I can't even remember the last time I had to go get carts outside. I've helped carry outs, but that's about it.

So, all of this as a punishment? I don't think so. :P

I've been working at Kroger since '06, and our store has one since I was hired. It seems like they're slowly being phased out though. Our Donatos used to have someone in the morning and someone in the evening who was specifically assigned to it. But now they cut out the Donatos morning shift entirely, the person manning Donatos usually shows up at 4pm and is expected to work primarily in the deli or bakery. In some of our neighboring stores, they've shut down their Donatos entirely.
