Metrics vs. Morale
Permalink

A commenter on another site made this wonderfully written post about how Kroger's metric-centered policy negatively affects the employees and the company, wanted to share for how insightful and true it is:

They want YOU to care more than they do. Smart people see right through that BS.

I know what you mean.
I'm working on not giving a damn but it's tough with a high work ethic.
I've lost all emotional connection to the store and my job.
But it's a little tougher to ignore everything else right in front of your face like gobacks, carts, etc.
Can you imagine the Kroger of the future like in The Jetsons?
Robots everywhere. And the customer presses a button.
But wait! We already have them press buttons by the cashier through debit or credit cards.
And Kroger is treating its employees like robots expecting one person to do multiple tasks that require more than one person.
And to do them as fast as possible with as little time as possible.

The Kroger of the future. Holy **** but I hope this doesn't happen.
If we ever have a massive natural disaster or somehow the human race reaches 2100 or 2200 I hope Kroger has gone out of business by then.
The future is going to be tough enough without George Jetson trying to get through Que Vision.

Oh I still work hard, but yes I also lack an emotional attachment to the place. If I showed up for work in the morning and the doors were locked and the store shut down I would shrug my shoulders and go back home to bed and not think twice about it. I do my work and quite well but I don't do anybody elses or care what anybody does, employee or customer. I don't participate in any store "activities" or care at all about their numbers or what goes on around there. It's actually quite liberating and wish I had adopted that attitude a long time ago.

You're a lazier man than myself.
If I found that happening, depending on where the cameras were located, I'd throw a shopping cart through the window.
One of those goddamned kid-sized carts that always clogs the cart corrals and causes back ups into the street.

Well Said! With this company i have seen too many killing themselves by taking on more than they can handle. I show up do what i can do but I am NOT killing myself. I hear all sorts of drama about his department and that person but truthfully i dont care about it or all these "talks" managers give. If you invest yourself too much for this company you will find your life going down the drain!

Not just down the drain but also clogging all of the pipes and creating a sewage back up.

The person quoted in the initial post of this thread is spot on.  I'd love to see a link for the site where it was originally posted.

A big problem is that you can't just shoehorn all these different programs geared towards profitability and cost saving, and just expect managers to find a way to reconcile them all together so that they make sense at a store level.

It just doesn't work, and it makes the store management look like idiots when they have to tell you "Well, this is what we have to do now"

You know it won't work, they know it won't work, but they have to save face and stay in some semblance of authority.  I'm not saying it's right, or makes any sense, but I'm betting that's the deal.
