How long did it take for you to know your pay rate?

I think this unusually; however, I haven't worked an hourly paid position in some time. I applied and accepted a part time position with Kroger as a Cashier. During the interview, the administrative manager told me that due to my experience I would not start at min wage, which is $7.25 where we live. Combined I have 11 years experience in the customer service industry, four directly linked to grocery store experience, with my last position being a front end manager, and several other years in other customer service positions at various financial institutions. I was told based on my grocery store experience, I would qualify for $9.00 a hour; however, with the added financial institution experience I would qualify for the max cashier pay of $13.00.

I had my first training shift last weekend, where I learned I was being paid $7.25 an hour until headquarters verified the information submitted. I signed a piece of paper which clearly stated the store manager recommended I receive a pay rate of $13.00 a hour. I was told it could take a week or so for headquarters to review and verify the information provided, at which point if the $13.00 a hour was approved I would be back paid all the hours worked at $7.25. Or headquarters could come back not accepting my financial institution experience and only pay me for direct grocery store experience, then my pay would be around $9.00. I was told I would be able to see when and if my pay rate changed in HR express and if it came in lower than the $13.00 the administrative manager would notify me.

This weekend will be a week and I still haven't heard anything. I go in for my second shift this weekend and HR express still has me listed for only $7.25. Is this normal? Does it normally take a while for Kroger to finalize your pay rate?

Yes, the Kroger corporate machine is in no hurry to give away extra money.

I would be shocked if they gave you $9 an hour for experience pay.  Normally, it is just $1.00 above minimun wage.

Let's say my payraise was on the 10th.  I would not see it in Express HR until the 17th.

Good luck and I hope you do get more for experience pay.

You are the second person to give me the response as being shocked at what was offered. This should at least be interesting to see how it unfolds. I would hate to start my employment with them on the wrong foot. I had another part time offer well, also well above min wage which I declined to accept the position at Kroger as they claim to be willing to work around my full time schedule as well. If the pay rate comes in below $9 I will upset that I picked Kroger over the other position.  We shall see!

Thanks for your reply!

Yea it's pretty shocking to get paid more than minimum wage starting out at Kroger unless you were offered a full time position (which, again, is another shocker in itself.)
