I think only big stores have a cheese shop, but it's like a sub division of deli. Don't really know anything about the position as my store is way too small to need one.
Generally in the whitest, oldest, snobbiest neighborhoods Kroger will set up a cheese shop so that the locals can reminisce about their European ancestors who clearly had a taste for the finer things, all while they drink overpriced alcohol, climb into their POS Park Avenue, and drive back to their home in the poorly named neighborhood "Paradise Acres," where everyone votes against taxes while simultaneously draining the government's bank account with their Social Security checks and Medicare benefits. Oh by the way this same group of people believes that every generation is getting progressively worse...
Cheese shop is a little more foo foo than your typical deli activity. It requires a little more finesse, and ability to communicate with customers.
A lot of the time, you'll be cutting and wrapping cheese, setting out samples, and interacting with customers... At least that's how it's supposed to work.
You'll also have an olive bar to attend to, but that doesn't take up too much of your time.
If you're the lead, manager... or whatever they want to call it in your division, you'll also be doing the ordering and doing backstock reviews.
In my store, cheese shop is also responsible for all of the pre-packaged product for deli that is out on the shelves and walls. We also do the mark downs, and take care of the truck when it comes in.
All in all, it's a pretty good gig. I highly recommend it, especially if you're already in deli. Lots of product to learn, but no big deal.

Cheers for the informative post. If it was a pretty good gig, I'm surprised it even got posted to the board. You'd think that people in store would be all over that.

You're welcome
Well, I think they have to post the opening no matter what. Who knows if they already have someone in the store that is already trained, or another cheese shop person from another store applying etc. etc.
We don't have a cheese lead in our store. It's just me and one other guy that has more experience and knowledge than me. Neither of us get payed anything extra special, and if we did it wouldn't be much due to our division is cheap as f#$% with a really bad contract. Your mileage may vary. Some divisions pay pretty well for cheese leads, and it requires specialized training through the main supplier. Either way, it sure beats the deli counter and all that circus.
whatever ..... i've worked at Krogers and i've experienced racism and sexism at it's best. So don't tell me what to do.
say.
or
think. and..... why don't you nose yourself in someone elses pot or just stick your face in the fried chicken hole. or better yet. take out the garbage yourself.
