Local 400 Mid Atlantic contract.

Just saw a letter near the time clock stating that Kroger is proposing no changes to our health care in 2015.  But mentions nothing about 2016.

Anyone hear anything about this?  From several of the people I've talked to they seem to think a strike is a real possibility.  Our contract meeting in on the 3rd.

Calls for strikes have become a fairly common tactic over the last few years.  Its the unions bad bet; scare the company into not completely screwing the employees.  The fact is most people can't afford to strike (even with strike pay) and sooner or later these locals are going to find themselves on strike with many of their members going to work.  They chose not fight in the past and now the old timers are going gone.  Now folks are saying why pay dues?

If there is no change this year then there will be no change for the life insurance for the contract if I recall.

strikes are an empty threat.  when the ATL 1996 contract was rejected on the first vote, we heard there wasn't a strike fund.

1996 is such a week local, it boggles my mind.  with no pay increase except a pittance at the top rate and losing spousal healthcare, it's hard to imagine what else can be given away on what was already given away in 2010 and now 2014.  when the contract expires next, the pay rates below the top won't have moved in eight years or more.

Ask your store steward what is going on......don't get your information third hand through the grapevine.....and go from there.....here's to hoping things do go well. In the same boat as you .....

"Weak locals" come from weak membership. if the company perceives the workers as having low confidence and willing to take whatever is front of them, that is what you are going to get - whatever theyre willing to propose.

I see people badmouthing their unions all the time on this board, which is sometimes justified, but id love to know how anybody thinks they are supposed to negotiate for more with very little leverage. I doubt very much that most people know what goes into the process.

Too many locals have engage in giveaways over the years that kept the old timers where they were and the screwed the new hires.  The unions are going to have to look long and hard in the mirror. Those folks could have afforded to fight-instead they screwed the new hires.

We can wear the pins and the buttons and tell customers/managers, but store managers have no say in what our contract is.  They really just take orders from regional managers and corporate.  Customers won't care either.  When the union called for a strike vote here, managers were saying "I'll be rich off the OT, go on strike"

Managers don't get OT.

there's not a Kroger manager or person ANYWHERE that wants a strike. And old time employees feel like they get the shaft, too.

you have to understand that the company and local have to strike a balance between the needs of people in vastly different situations.
