I don't think that Kroger should be open on Thanksgiving. Making employees work is taking them away from family. It should be a law that ALL stores, including Kroger, close on major holidays. It's just not fair. If they don't close all day then they should close at 5pm or even before to let the employees spend the holiday with their families.
I love working on actual Thanksgiving Day. Getting paid time and a half on one of the deadest days is pretty kickass. Especially when it takes the thought off my mind that I don't have a family.
I think we close at 6:00. I get 50 cents extra per hour for working - $4.00, plus an extra day holiday pay @ 6 hours. I had the day off last year so I will probably have to work this year.
Thanksgiving is not the issue, it's the day before. I looked at working Thanksgiving with the free food and very relaxed atmosphere as a reward for surviving the day before. Also my sister would go to her friend's house for dinner and they'd send food home because they felt sorry for me. I just wish we got holiday pay.
This year I probably won't work on Thanksgiving because my school availability blocks Tuesday and Thursday and I doubt our schedule maker will pay attention.
Not that it matters, we're actually closing at 6pm this year!
also does anyone else love those customers that come in and say "oh it's a shame you're open"?? you wanted a corkscrew ma'am that's why we're here!
Retail follows the scent of money. Customers want to shop on Thanksgiving Day. Customers want to stand outside in front of stores on Thanksgiving Day ahead of Black Friday... or should we just call it Black Thursday now with select retailers opening at 4:00PM or earlier that day? Blame the customers. They are the ones taking you away from your family, not so much the retail giants, although they are still partly to blame. Some grocery chains like Publix and Aldi let their employees spend the day with their families, and some wholesale clubs like Costco do as well, but for the most part, greed takes precedence over family.
When I worked at Kroger during Thanksgiving day, I actually didn't mind. I didn't get holiday pay (being a new part-timer and all) but we still got free food and drinks. Also, a lot less people were around especially in the early afternoon. We closed at 4PM that day, if I remember.

ABSOLUTELY.
As long as teeming, thronging hoards of two legged PIGS continue to swarm all retail stores and support this insanity, the retailers will in turn continue to cut hours, staffing, wages, benefits, etc.........And we will eventually be working ALL holidays----yes, including Christmas----before it's over with.
Working Thanksgiving is awesome. It's the easiest day ever to work on, you just basically go hang out with your co workers (if you're in a service dept. at least) and get free food. I did it last year, and hope I get to again.
I wouldn't mind working on Thanksgiving this year. My store was completely and totally dead last year. My coworkers and I goofed off and did nothing for four hours.
I was told that Kroger couldn't stay open for Christmas Day. The day before is a different story.
As for working on Thanksgiving, I'd prefer not to, but since my store closes at 5, I'd probably be there for 4 hours at most, and being in the deli, probably would start shutting down by 4. So whatever.

I want NOTHING to do with Black Friday though.
Black Friday has nothing to do with grocery stores.

Black Friday is a great time to work in a grocery store. All the customers are at the malls.

This, this, this and this. Black Friday was awesome. No one in the store, quiet and calm. I could always get so much sh!t done that day it was ridiculous. Spend the first 1/4th of the day making sure we were recovering well and taking down any thanksgiving deco, then spend the 3/4 of the day getting things into the Christmas mode.
Thanksgiving Day was always awesome too. Rush till 11:45, then calm till close. I had my lockdown procedure for the stores I worked in planned out so well I could have everyone out of the building no later than 20 minutes after close.
Still don't miss it though.
