I work in the meat department, and all of our hours got slightly reduced this week, the week before thanksgiving. How does this make sense? :/ It wasn't cut by much, but everyone lost about an hour on average.
Maybe they are having you "donate" some hours to the front end. It's been done at my store. Management will get a certain dept to "donate" (actually takes from said dept) for the front end. It's ridiculous IMO.
It happened in my department too, the last couple weeks i've been getting 28 hours, I was on vacation this week, next week i come back and I'm getting 23. And i'm getting the most hours of all the part time employees.

I think it has to do with Obamacare and avoiding paying for your insurance.
All you can do is:
Find another part time job, volunteer for extra hours, answer phone if called in and wait for the newbies to drop-off like flies.
Most new people are insulted about being scheduled 20 hours at minimum wage so they give up and quit quickly. Most people can't survive on $100 a week.

They'd be lucky to get that here. Lots of non-baggers have been scheduled 8-9 hours. Even had 1 turn in their 2 weeks because of it. The turnover can get pretty ridiculous due to the hours given.

My hours have been sporadic. I started off with like 28, and sometimes even over that (a couple of times I was almost at 37 hours), then I ended up with 16 hours (which is 93 bucks after taxes), but then it picked up again since two newbies dropped off, albeit slightly. So I am scheduled for 21, but 90% of the time they call me in at least once, so I get an extra 6-7 hours. It would make no sense if my hours drop again the next few weeks with the holiday shopping rush, especially given that it's deli.
At this point though, I'm considering a stay-a-home gig to basically bring in some money for those weeks they want to be stingy to the part-timers.
BTW, I thought part-timers don't get insurance unless they're with the company for like 18 months.

It depends on your contract. Here, we used to get insurance after a year. We get insurance for our dependents if we average more than 32 hours a week. But, now the recent contract stipulates that we have to average a certain number of hours per quarter to keep insurance. The insurance will pause if we average less than that limit in a quarter. The insurance kicks in again if we work above that average.
It varies from state to state, contract to contract. Ask your shop steward or study your union handbook.
I started Kroger a couple of months ago. I work in the FE. I agree it's ridiculous. I haven't seen any department donating hours to the FE. Our hours got cut. The last 5 or so who got hired have been "on call". With a promise of hours to return because of the upcoming holidays. Well next week is a holiday and low man on the totem pole is still "on call"! Would have been nice to know this was an "on call" position when I applied. I wouldn't have wasted my time!

Especially since most on call jobs pay ~9 per hour starting off.
