Union Dues & My W-2
Permalink

Ok I'm a college student & part-time courtesy clerk at Kroger. I started working there in August 2013. Around the beginning of 2014 there were Union representatives on the prowl at my job. I was tracked down by the reps & being persuaded to join the Union(all while on the clock & trying to work right at the front end in front of the registers might I add you lol.) I still to this day have no clue the full understanding of what I agreed to sign up for. To the best of my knowledge, if I'm wrongfully fired or feel some type of unfair injustice is being done to me at work, the Union is the place to call. The only thing that made me sign up was the fact the Union rep told me that I would be able to get my dues back on my W-2 during tax season. I just took a look at my W-2 & I see nothing about my Union dues at all.

You won't be getting your dues back but you will be able to deduct them as an itemized deduction.

which means nothing because of how little we earn.

it's probably just easier to take a standard deduction than itemize because we probably don't have enough to make it worth itemizing.  that's been my experience anyway.

Same here. Last year I was able to claim my health insurance as nontaxable income which increases my return, however.

This is the original poster & I just want to say what the ****. I want to get out of the Union then. I don't feel I need them for real. If anything happens to me I'll just look for another job because like I stated before, I'm just a student I'm not looking to make a future with Kroger & if I was I'd probably shoot myself. Most people I work with say they don't even notice that $10.60 being evaporated from their paycheck, but believe me I DO.

I understand.   I wasn't in the union for the first few years that I was employed, but when I decided I wanted to move up, there were "office politics" that I wanted to avoid by being in the union. 40$ a month to a part timer making minimum wage is huge and I can't blame you.   You can always rejoin later on if you so decide.

I hear you.  I joined because of drama.  It's feels like paying mafia protection money.  I think you can't leave the union except on your yearly anniversary date.  At least that's what I was lead to believe.

If it's too good to be true, it usually is.
