It depends if you are under a union or not and what rules they have. Our union forbids our store managers to force any employees to stay over, with the exception that any closing cashiers must stay until all customers have left the store if it is closing time.

Ask your shop steward.  No one here has a copy of your contract.

Find your contract online or call up your union office.

If you need to be at home for the kids by a certain time or at another job, ask if you can come in early.

Here in Mi, the rule is the managers have to ask you an hour before the end of your shift.  They can make us stay over 2 hours past our scheduled shift.  This has been argued over and the union has looked into it.  The managers are allowed to keep us over 2 hours after our shift or it is job abandonment.

I like OT so, I am ok with working 12+ hour days.  When half our night crew calls in, I am taking all the OT they can afford.

All I can say is work efficiently so you don't need extra time to get everything done.

As mouse said normally the contracts state that you can be held over by up to 2 hours by "needs of the business"(or can't be forced to stay at all) but after that it's voluntary. I would ask your union rep just to make sure.

Some places may differ in contract language or the like.

I would take a lunch if they made me stay over.
