I worked at the Kroger in my area last summer as a bagger, and it seemed that most or all of the grocery clerks were men. I want to get into another department this summer, and I'm eying an overnight grocery clerk position. Would they be less likely to hire me in as a grocery clerk if I'm a girl?
At my store I work night crew with 5 female grocery clerks! They get on my nerves big-time with all of their chattering, like he say, she say, conversations. They get pissed off because I don't want to break down the truck with them, and they report me to the store manager for not stay back there to work with them. They give me a headache, I just avoid being around them as much as possible.
Thanks for the help! The lady I spoke to (not sure if she's the new assistant manager or not, but the last one quit) said she'd give me a call a couple days after I put in my application. Still waiting to hear back, hopefully they haven't decided not to hire me back. I see no reason why they wouldn't, I worked my butt off last summer for them. I wasn't sure under which department grocery clerk falls under (is it sales floor, backroom or something else??) but I made sure to put my preference in one of the blank spaces. I just hope I get a call back and that there is a position open on nights.
I've worked with 5 different gals during my time in night crew.
#1 simply wasn't able to do the job well enough. Yes, anyone can break down pallets and open boxes but there is a time limit to the job. Then depending on how your crew is organized, you may be left alone for most of the shift. If you're the chatty-social type, it may not work out so well.
#2 liked to butt heads with the lead without being able to hold her weight.
#3 Stocked quick enough and was getting better despite her age but didn't like the night hours because family.
#4 and #5 Quick workers, knew the job well but wasn't too emotionally stable and working nights didn't exactly help.
For each of those gals there were 3 or 4 dudes who couldn't do the job either. I'm not trying to bash here, just staying on topic.
At least in my crew, we give everyone who applies a shot (and we go through a lot of people) but most people don't understand that night crew can be a full 8 hour workout. Most people and even other employees only see us during our breaks or while finishing up conditioning so it looks easy. Once they figure out it's not a joyride most give up.
But if you can handle it, its guaranteed 40+ hours a week. And I've always appreciated breaking up the sausage party.
I work better when there aren't people around to distract me, and I'm a total night owl so the hours wouldn't bother me at all. It's totally normal for me to stay up all night (literally) if I get the chance. As for it being an 8-hour workout -- if I can spend half a shift pushing 7 carts at a time up a hill for an hour straight in 90 degree weather, I think I'll be fine bending and lifting for 8 hours. Hard to say if I'll be fast enough, but I'd appreciate it if they gave me shot and I'd sure try my damnedest to meet whatever the quota is. As it is, I still haven't heard back from whoever it was that I talked to. I'm going to call tomorrow and check on it.
