I've been on night crew for 15 years working the midnight shift and sick of it!!!I want to go back to days, it has taken a toll on me mentally and physically, and I'm getting to old to be working midnights. I'm the only original night crew member left, everyone else either quit or got fired! I'm the soul survivor!!! I'm wondering if management will let me work in grocery on the day shift?
pray to the kroger gods and try to find your union steward and explain your situation. In my store, once you're on night stock, they will never take you off. We usually have a team of 13 because our store is so big, some are on FMLA or other leaves/vacation, some transferred out, and some quit. They are now left with a team of 5 to work about 115,000 sq. feet with some working 12 hour shifts just to get their load out on the floor.
Check your union contract. Mine says I can claim an earlier start time from someone with less seniority. I was working 4 p to 12 a and wanted the day shift but they kept saying there were no openings on the day shift. I checked the schedule - someone was working the days, right? There were several employees with less seniority than me so I just changed my availability to days, 6 am to 7 pm and I got scheduled accordingly. They just didn't want me off the late nights because I was the only one that would do the closing duties and work hard. Well I got screwed because I got to walk in at 6 am to a trashy store and do all the closing duties I used to do, only at 6 am!!! But, I got off at 2 pm so it was worth it.
If you are wanting to stay in the same position, say clerk, then it shouldn't matter but it's not uncommon for management to completely disregard the union contract and do whatever they want. Check with your union and see what they say before you talk to management.
