My first day at the deli was yesterday & it went pretty well. I'm just worried I won't like it in about a month lol. It's gonna take awhile for me to remember the meats etc I rather just package up food & cook. My shifts are from 9am-5:30pm. It's really slow during those hours. I feel like an annoyance when I freeze with a customer & ask for help. I'm thinking about switching departments..maybe floral? Lol any tips advice for deli clerks are welcomed!!
If you don't get stuck with night shifts then you will be much better off. I've gotten lucky enough to have some 10:30-7pm shifts because of a coworker being on vacation and it is heaven not having to close!
If you start getting closing shifts... RUN. Run as fast as you can and don't look back. If you are just worried about memorizing stuff then don't worry too badly, it gets easier. Soon you'll be putting in numbers for the most common things without even thinking about it :). Also, you'll be able to pick out meats and cheeses by looks alone without having to look at the name (I never thought I would be able to do that but you learn the more you do it).
However, as a new person you'll probably get stuck up at the counter a lot until you learn more about packaging and cooking (and get faster at it) so if you don't like the customer interaction then you might want to consider another department. You'll have busy days and slow days and some days will be overwhelming until you get used to it (this is all depending on the size of your store though).
ive been in deli for about 2 months and i really cant complain about it too much. it is not a hard job in my opinion. i close a lot which i dont like but im gonna try to deal with that later haha. i make the back ups, clean, do dishes, wait on customers. also you will have the numbers memorized in no time. it def gets easier.
so overall, i see people telling you to get out of deli but i personally dont think its that bad. i mean it isnt necesarily fun but it's work so... haha good luck!
