I'm the one on leave in another country. I got back Wednesday, I'm due to go back to work May 31st, everything normal.
Saturday the 16th, while still in India, I forgot how to walk and sprained my ankle super bad. The doctor I saw yesterday gave me a work note saying I had to do desk duty and keep it elevated, so even if they allowed me a stool at a register or whatever, it wouldn't work.
I now have a week (minus delays for the holiday) to extend my leave - for 2 more weeks.
Any tips? I'm going there as soon as I can to start the paperwork process, but I'm not sure this will be done before the doctor says I can go back!
Just call them. tell them you have a doctors note and will bring it as soon as you can. it wasn't your choice to fall and sprain your ankle. They will have to deal with it. tell them that you're sorry for the inconvenience. It's what they would tell you. Welcome home. How was the vacation? Visit Bodh Gaya or anything?

Unfortunately, I have to file for a new leave. My HR person told me that since it wasn't a work accident ("I was... researching... new markets! Yes, that's it!"), it's not their responsibility and it's like really, all this work for 2 weeks off?
I got the paperwork but I have to wait until Tuesday to start and better hope the doctor does this quickly, as well as big HR. Thank god they're letting me fax everything.
I had tons of fun, but didn't get to Bihar. I was mostly in the south, it's really expensive getting north. I was in Agra, actually, walking from the Taj Mahal complex to Agra Fort. At least I got a good story.
ALSO
They screwed up my insurance coverage!!! I got back in the country Wednesday, first time in 4 months I could actually call Americans for free, and Blue Cross and the prescription plan tell me my coverage ended January 31. I take prescription medicine, I need refills. My foot's in a cast, I can't go back to work until I see a doctor because my foot's in a cast so I can't go to work to get my coverage...
I called all the right people, but you know. Three day weekend. So I just have to wait - but I said screw it and went to the doctor, who ordered a bunch of X-rays and an ultrasound. I had to fly almost 20 hours in economy... my foot is bruised to hell and back, and I was at risk for clots. You can't say, "Oh there's a clot risk, we'll do the test in a week!"
Everything will be covered retroactively, but I'm still going to get the bills.
It's been an interesting week.
ALSO
My store's gotten worse since I left - they're calling deli and meat up to cashier! Everyone around us is paying better (McD at 7.75 opening, per their sign) and people aren't passing the drug test. Better get cracking on that transfer request!
Ugh, I'm sorry to hear about all your troubles. I am, however, curious to how your insurance was canceled January 31... did you not file the insurance paperwork at the end of last year? Did you not work an average of 28-30 hours between October and January?
I also have my doubts that Kroger will reimburse you. >_<

I've been on an approved leave of absence since January 17th - they screwed up my leave paperwork! Due to craziness, the week of the 31st was my last paycheck.
You've got me obsessing and cursing this holiday weekend yet again, but I remember they said it was a premium issue - to wit, none have been paid since that week.
and I know Kroger doesn't care, but I've been fighting with insurance companies for almost 13 years now. BCBS will cover this.
