No more scanning produce?

We have been told that from now on, if a produce item has a barcode, we must scan it instead of keying in the PLU (because they don't trust us to correctly key in organic produce). Our FE manager showed a list of all the cashiers, and what percent of our produce is being hand-scanned (I don't think anyone had over 20% hmm), with the implication that we will be "coached" if those numbers do not improve. Is your store doing something similar? Is it seriously because they don't think we can distinguish between organic and not? What about all the produce in self checkout?

Customers in self checkout won't know the produce codes, or the difference in the codes starting with a 9.  It's sometimes difficult to recognize the difference between organic and regular produce.  It's a minor change that shouldn't be that difficult to work with.

It's not just your store. Ours has been pushing a similar thing for a little while now. People don't really do it even though we keep trying to encourage them to. Even our Managers don't because it's just more convenient to key in the PLU. That said, we are trying. I do some of the Coaching that you mention, and it's one of the things that we try to bring up to each person so that they are aware of it and can, at the very least, start scanning the easier things (anything entered by Quantity rather than weight).

Here's the thing too:

They know if things are being keyed incorrectly. If the produce department is showing a large amount of on-hand organic produce, and yet their inventory doesn't reflect that, then something is being done wrong once it gets to the register. So people are having issue distinguishing. That's why they're trying to encourage people to scan produce as opposed to key it in, especially newer cashiers before they get into the habit of keying items in.

Keying in produce codes is one of the things that makes the rounds with management. No, you're probably not going to hear about it again. No, they are not going to "coach" you.

Don't worry about it.

Organic produce does, indeed, look exactly the same as normal produce.

we had a district email about this recently. this of course only works if every item has a double stack bar code that is in the system correctly. on the touch screen registers I don't think you can even key in the PLU. they don't help ELMS and can sometimes fight with you asking for weight and so on if they're picked up more than once.

In this case, when the item isn't in the system correctly, they encourage people to fill out Item NOF forms for the items and turn those in. It takes just a moment to do, but it makes sure that nobody else down the line has that issue. From there, it's just a matter of making sure the produce has the appropriate stickers on them in a location that is scannable. Usually it's not an issue, but on smaller produce such as Roma, Kiwi, Limes, and the various Potatoes, it becomes problematic because they usually don't contain stickers unless they're organic, in which case, they say just Key it in like usual.

And what if the bar code doesn't work? Then you have to punch in the plu code. Scanning can make it go faster, HOWEVER... It MUST work with little or no errors
