I've been working at Kroger for 2 years as a courtesy clerk & school starts in about 3 weeks. I'm going out of state to attend college, but I still want to be able to come back home for my job. A few of my co-workers go to college & said they were told the rule is they must come back once a month. My question is does anybody know what happens if I'm not able to fulfill that requirement? I do not have my own car or anybody that could come get me & bring me back & forth from school to home once a month. I've looked up public transportation such as bus & train trips & that would take a total of 9-10 hours from point A to B & vice versa meaning that my plan to come back on the weekends is flawed because such a long trip like that would take up both weekend days. Right now I know for sure I'd be back home & able to work for Thanksgiving, Winter break(lasts a month), Spring Break & of course Summer Break. I plan on talking to my manager about this but I just wanted to know if anyone else had been through a similar predicament or know the rules about this exactly.

pretty sure you can just take a leave of absence. We have people leave for school all the time, they always come back when the semester ends. I think they get to keep seniority too
Hi this is the original poster, I just want to ask what is a leave of absence? I was told by a floor supervisor that a leave of absence was only taken for medical reasons.

I believe that in many instances a floor supervisor doesn't always have a lot of brains. I know ours don't. They're people who've been there a long time who think it's cool to put on a red vest and act like they have some authority (whoop dee doo). Anywho, it basically means that you intend to return after taking a "break" for whatever reason. Ask your union steward for a copy of the contract or for them to explain what happens during a LOA. The steward *should* be able to walk you through it. I think a LOA would be a good idea in your case. Hope that helps
most floor supervisors are as brainless as anyone else on the floor. You need to talk to your schedule maker about it which is the Customer Service Manager if you are front end.
Come back and work once a month? What idiot told you that? Try looking in your employee handbook about a leave of absence. In SW District you can take one for reasons other than medical. But, if you are caught looking for another job while on leave of absence you will be fired.
Talk directly to the manager AND the FES if you can. When I worked for Kroger, we had this one guy who went to school at Alabama (my store is in Texas). He comes back when the semester wraps up.

IN Alabama. I'm sure Alabama has more than one school.

tbh, this is the only reason to take a leave. This is also a great thing to do on days off, sick days, after work, on a poop break, and during vacation.
If you're taking a leave for school reasons, aren't you basically "looking" for another [better] job anyway?

He could have also meant Alabama University which is shortened to Alabama, or Bama. Just like University of Georgia is often shortened to Georgia by locals even though there are 20+ schools with the word Georgia in the name. Quit being such a brat.
To the OP, I know several people that have come back from college over this last summer and took back up their jobs. So it is doable. You might also check and see if there is a Kroger or Kroger family store in the area of your university that you can transfer to while you're in school. That's how most students going away seem to handle that issue.

This. Thought it was common knowledge, I guess it's only for those who bother with keeping up.
Like how UT is Texas, and almost all the flagship state universities in most states are often referred to by just the state name.
Oh well.

Oh, ok. I get it now. Hope those kids going to UT in Tennessee know it's the University of Texas in Tennessee. I guess if you live in Texas, you would assume UT is University of Texas. But if you are talking to a group of people from across the US (United States) it could be confusing.

lol, this shows how out of touch you are. Go read something other than union newsletters.

No, it shows what a b!#@$ you are. Thanks, but I don't want to read a union newsletter. I'd rather read literary fiction, what have you read lately?
This whole argument is stupid, but I will say, I would never assume UT is Texas, when it really could be a lot of different options. If I type in UT in Google, the first thing that comes up for me was the University of Toledo.

That said, this argument is still stupid ;)
Spoiler
I believe it is my duty to show anon the error of her ways. And to show that there's a world outside of Backwater, Tennessee.

I agree. But NutritionWhore likes to argue and have the last word. She likes to make sure everyone thinks she is the smartest person and the only one who knows anything. Sad. She doesn't even work at Kroger anymore but she is still here spouting off. Possibly they have computer access at the looney bin lol!
Wait till football season starts, you'll see her in the stands yelling BAMA BAMA BAMA at the wrong dang game lol!
