there are better opportunities out there!?  I used to be happy at my job but recently had a change of heart and realized that since I'm not rewarded for going above and beyond for that place, I've asked around (and even been asked) about other opportunities with different companies.  Turns out there are so many better options out there!  Who the hell wants to work a job that's stressful, hot in the summer, cold in the winter, back breaking, and you have to work with morons!?  That doesn't even factor in the bull**** "brilliant" ideas that come through all the time!  Just a heads up to keep your options open, there's better stuff out there.  Don't be afraid to jump!  I'm not sure what a capped person makes over the course of a year @ 40 hours but I imagine it's not much more than $25,000-30,000.  That's **** these days

Oh, I know that... but what you fail to see is that If i were to take on this other magical job I'd start out at the bottom again and my lifestyle would be interrupted for at least several years.

That would be so annoying.

Right..? I like paying for a housekeeper.. making my own schedules..

But the biggest thing is, I like predictability.

The thing is, it'll take you that long to get up to the top, if at all, at Kroger.

Unless, of course, you're good at bribery.

OP here, I understand where you guys are coming from "starting over" is hard.  Sure your lifestyle would be interrupted, and I'm very aware of this but I'm thinking of something that's a career.  Many people think kroger is a career, but I want to make real money and I think of kroger as a stepping stone to that REAL job.  Sure after some years you'll be living "ok" but there are other jobs that pay 2-3 times more and would make for a much more comfortable lifestyle.

I used to think just like you guys but have seen the light.

Well, you know those other jobs usually require at least a 4 year degree and lots of related experience. If you can find me a job paying 75-120k with similar benefits and no degree in a small town, point me to it!

are you implying that anyone in a grocery store (besides manager, pharmacist) makes upwards of 50k? LMAO!  I'm capped at 12.75 and according to my taxes, *rake in* between 20,000-23,000 although according to my calculator @ 40hours/week I would have made under 20k.

 Not necessarily.

Web development/design, something that I'm very passionate about, is a very lucrative job.  I know folks who live off coding/designing websites and don't have a degree to start.  The degree (can get an associates and be fine) gives more leverage, sure, but it's not a requirement.

Hell, I'm a blogger, and I've made money doing that as well in the past.  I know a woman who makes more money doing that in a month than you'd do as a Kroger part-timer in 6.  AND you get to stay home while doing it.  I dunno about you, but I happen to like not dealing with customers in fear that they'd be so stupid that I ring their frigging necks.

With that being said though, nothing happens if you don't push for it.  It's up to you to find your happy, and sell yourself.

You will have to drive to the city for that.

very well said.  It's taken me many years to realize this.  If you don't take a chance, you'll be doing the same exact thing you're doing now until you're able to retire, which might mean working until you're 70!  I can't imagine how my back would be doing this job for another 5,10, 20!! years.  I enjoy the work, but I'm not so sure it's worth the BS anymore.

sounds like you, as well as many others, need to look outside the box.  There are other jobs out there, you just have to look past fast food and retail (those are starter jobs which are fine for a high schooler, but you never really earn a comfortable living).

Think about it this way:  Think about the high number of people who have worked here for years and still live paycheck to paycheck.  They likely have no savings or otherwise have very little to show for all those years of service!  How many of you guys go in on payday to get your check because you need it (assuming you're off on payday)?  I won't.  I mean, some people are so broke that they have to go in to get their check that day, for bills or other things.  I find that ridiculous!  It's 1 of 2 things:  1) they're not properly managing their money or 2) they make so little that they need every last penny they make THAT DAY.  Think about that.  Your pay check will be there the next day...it's not going anywhere.  Do you like that place so much that you go there on your day off!  Sheesh.  You're so brainwashed that you can't realize that you're stuck, spinning your wheels.  If you don't do as thestruggleisreal suggested, you'll be on the same path to nowhere for the rest of your working years

I'm still this way, but I get double the hours now so I have a little more wiggle room.  But my thing as of late: find your happy.  I have really bad anxiety around large crowds, and I work in food service.  Luckily, I'm tucked in the kitchen, so I have little interaction with customers, but even on the super busy days, it's horrible.  I'm holding on to it for now since there is only one income--mine, but I'm looking for something better for my health.

I ran into a co-worker of mine the other day and she said that she hasn't had a day off in a month.  That store is so understaffed, and they don't seem to either care or can't bring in anyone else, or a combo of the two.  Had I stayed, I would've ended up in a really bad place, which I don't need since I have a kid.

that's the ****ty thing, many of the people who really work hard and excel at their job hardly ever get recognition.  like that stupid board showing customer mentions or whatever the hell it is...I take the customers to the items, smile, really genuinely care, and haven't got mentioned 1 time.  I bet I could give ****ing handjobs if I were to bag someone's groceries and I still wouldn't get recognized.  This whole place is nothing but a game to most people.  Let's pat ourselves on the back, we're in an elite group (pfft).

They used to give you a $5 Kroger gift card if your name was mentioned.  My comanager said I was mentioned so I asked for my gift card.   She said she would get it.  Well three times asking and a month later she finally said "I put it in the safe to keep it safe".  From what?  Me?  So about 3 months later I walked behind the floral counter and there was this gift card with my name on it.  Really?  She just tossed it on the desk, never told me about it.  Not a thank you, nothing.

the problem is at least for me that no one is willing to hire you. plus when asked when available you don't know when because you schedule never stays the same. also having a college degree doesn't always help. i know someone with a masters in business who still works at Kroger because no one will hire them.

 This

Working for Kroger seems to be the kiss of death for a lot of people.  HR people outside of our industry don't really "get it" (not unlike customers).  I get the impression they look at my resume and say "Oh... you work at a grocery store.  Alrighty then".

Job interviews are fun too.  You can only wax poetic, and do a verbal tap dance, trying to translate what you do from day to day into something that might be something tangible for these people to understand for so long.  To do so makes you look and sound insane.

well that all depends on how many years you've put in.  If you've worked at Kro-mart for a year, then yes, it's not going to look spectacular.  But if you've stuck with the same company for 5, 10, 15 years, then that looks good for a potential new "hirer"  In saying that I am 100% implying that people should be willing to take a chance!  So many are afraid of losing "time" well, I'll tell you this much, what little bit of time you've spent could easily double or triple before you're actually able to retire.

"you don't know when you're available"

If you've got an interview, you're available ANYTIME.  Screw work, you're trying to push forward!!  You shouldn't be worried about getting a write up (whoop de doo!).

Maybe I'm just excited because I've found a company who I am excited to make a leap for!  The pros of it ($$$$$$) seem to well outweigh the cons of it.  Someday should I achieve this goal, I will fill everyone in on what it is and how it actually compares, because right now I'm just going on what I've heard directly.  My  point is, you've gotta be thinking about your well-being and the future!
