It was busy, we were both stressed, you know the drill. The check was a "disablity[sic] check" for just under $1000 which looked like it was from the UFCW (had the correct address and everything), and had the Kroger logo. My coworker said that the scammer's ID matched the name on the check, and he said he'd gotten it for a hand injury. My coworker (who's new to the office and was training there) asked me how to cash it, the scammer told her to just 5 slash it and put it in, and I stupidly agreed since it's a Kroger check and all (which meant it didn't need to go through Certegy). Wasn't till 15 minutes later when another guy came in with a nearly identical looking check for the same amount that I freaked out and realized we'd been had. We took another closer look at the fake check, the logo was a bit faded, and there was that one misspelled word. I showed it to our FE backup lead, he said it looked legit enough that he'd have cashed it too. I immediately called our manager (who was out for the day), texted her photos of the check, and she sent other stores an alert. She said we should be fine since he had ID and all, but I'm not sure.
Anyways, how worried should we be? I'm fine with writeups, but can we get fired? (the transaction was done in my coworker's numbers and she processed it, but I approved it). I'm in the union, could they help if I get called in, or is money loss like this a termination-worthy offense? Any general advice? Thanks :)
It gets me so mad when scammers try to pull things like that. We work hard for our money, just to have some low life trying to cheat the system possibly getting us fired.
I don't see a reason for you being terminated, since you didn't do anything wrong. You did everything by the book, you checked the ID, it matched the name, and did the best to make sure everything was correct. I would've probably done the same too. If they try to get you in trouble I would try to get the union involve and see if they can do anything for you.
The union does issues checks if you are out on leave because of something that happened at the store. You should only cash checks kroger affiliated for your co workers that you see @ the store. There is no black and white answer as to if you would be terminated because you accepted it. When it comes to these kinds of issues your store management has very little say in if you will keep your job. Since it is considered a fraudulent check loss prevention might make that call on if you keep your job.

So if I want to cash a paycheck, I have to cash it at my store? I can't cash it at a Kroger that is a few blocks away from my store? Can I have my paycheck deposited at any bank of my choice, or does Kroger get to choose that too?

Most krogers in my division will only cash kroger payroll at the store that the person works at because people in the past have duplicated the checks. There is no verification process for 5/ when cashing kroger checks.. you could run a piece of paper through there if you wanted to. Why you wouldnt cash your check at your store is beyond me though.

Open a bank account like every other adult.
Uboat, those were hypothetical questions. I've had a bank account since 1971, retirement, stock portfolio, annuities, etc. So, I can assure you your snide comments were taken as the immature person that you are. Adults usually don't try to pick on people. No wonder Kroger sucks with employees like you.
The problem is you bypassed the system by doing the 5/ which is a guaranteed check and only used for things you know are legit like a vendor pay money order you just printed say to do a mileage reimbursement or a payroll check from someone in your store.
I expect if/when the check comes back as fraudulent you'll be looking for other work because your store will be out $1000 and you didn't let it get verified by KCRC and Certegy by doing a 4/

The union might be able to get your jobs back but I'd expect this will lead to termination.
The best thing that could happen is you get a better job with a better company that you will enjoy. Mistakes happen. I'd think positive if I were you. It's not the end of the world. Learn from it and move on if you have to. Good luck!
