What should I expect to do? Also, how does taking carts to cars work? Who bags the groceries while I'm gone?

The cashier or the customer will bag the groceries while you are gone.

What should you expect to do?
Have a cheery attitude and face the possibility of management doing its best to remove it.
Note I did write 'possibility' as not all management staff are jackasses.

You don't really take carts to cars unless requested. Sometimes it's obvious that help can be used.
Most of the time it's a customer's request to the cashier.

Who bags the groceries when you're gone?
Another courtesy clerk.
You're supposed to float from register to register.
If you don't have enough courtesy clerks -- and since this is Kroger, you won't -- the cashier will assist or the customer will bag or both.

Have some fun.  We don't pay you enough to not have fun.

Don't worry things should be rather simple once you get the hang of it. I've been on the job for about 2 months now, and the customers are not the ones giving me trouble. Very rarely you will be the only bagger in your store, but normally you're never alone. You should be able to switch out between cart duty. Also the assisting customers out to their cars will probably be the easiest part of the job. Have fun, and good luck! aww

for cart duty, be prepared for lazy people who leave carts five feet from a corral, or, my favorite, the ones who abandon a cart in the lobby creating a traffic jam or maze of carts for customers leaving and entering to move through. And this is probably ten feet or less from where they got their cart in the first place.
