I think I walked out with something

So preface: It was a nine hour shift, and afterwards I had to do some light shopping. I just about passed out from heat exhaustion yesterday, and I've been dealing with the aftereffects all day. I even left my keys in the bathroom for like an hour. Anyways when I was going through self-checkout the girl on shift was like 17/18 with her friends "keeping her company", and some way or another I ended up not paying for one of those stupid little things of lunch meat. I either miscounted them or didn't get the barcode, but when I got home I realized that there wasn't on my receipt.

Now, I'm going back to pay for it before my next shift, but I was wonder how do I explain it? Also how often do they watch the overnight cameras? Since I've seen Kroger be the fire first ask never types, and I'd rather not get fired over a 0.60 packet of turkey I didn't even realize I took.

It's great you have such good ethics about you---that's as rare as a 16 year old virgin female these days---but on this one, I wouldn't sweat it.

You didn't get stopped, so you're good.
If any one SHOULD ask, play dumb. You're good.
You bring it up and make a target of yourself now?

Not so good.

I would just tell the truth.  Or write down the bar code and next time you buy something ring it up then.  If you decide to forget about it as mentioned above and just keep it, that is stealing.  I wouldn't advise it.

When I worked Drug/GM I wore an apron with pockets and I would always put items I found on the wrong isle in my pockets, then shelf them when I worked the next aisle.  I came home with all kinds of things like dental floss, lipstick, etc. in my pockets.  I just took them back in.  I even used to joke with my comanager about it.

I would probably keep it and not say anything.  It all works out in the end anyway.  One day you'll pay for something and you won't have it when you get home and your receipt will be missing.  If you must return it, just say you found it in a bascart.

I don't understand why people responding are saying to lie about it.  Tell the truth, you accidentally didn't scan it, didn't notice until you got home, and you want to pay for it.  Or just ring one up when you are at work, pay for it, put it back.  It's not that complicated and you won't get in trouble if you do say anything.

For .$60 cents? I wouldn't even worry about it. It's just .$60 cents. However if you choose to go back, just say it was an honest mistake. Things like that happen. Management may even say "don't worry about it" or thank you for your honesty.

I wouldn't worry about it.

I had something similar happen to me. I was doing a quick pick-up of some stuff--garbage bags, lunch meat, diapers, etc. I paid for everything, went to my car, and realized that I walked out with the garbage bags, outside of a bag. I chalked it up to being really tired and not noticing it. I didn't bring it up, no one came up to me about it, and even if they were to look at the cameras now, I don't work there anymore. xD

So you stole some garbage bags.  Most people would just pay for them.  Then there are those who think "well, it was a mistake so I guess that means they're free".

Just remember it next time your paycheck is short for some reason.  Probably just a mistake.  Don't say anything!!!

Seems like if you say anything, you've admitted to stealing...theft = termination, does it not?  I've had some ****ty managers who have fired people over **** like that (accidents do happen, but a firing doesn't seem right when you admit fault)
