Wine in your stores

Grocery stores in my state are getting wine starting July first but we can only sell it by pretty much the same hours as liquor stores, so no wine on Sunday still! Where's the convenience?

Anyway! To those not in a weird state, what's it like selling wine and other booze? (I went to a store in NM once and they had fireball!) Do customers have more stupid questions and/or expect you to be an expert on wine pairings or whatever?

Virginia here. We sell wine and beer from 6 AM to midnight, any day of the week. We have two aisles filled with wine, and one for beer, as well as a wine consultant who is an employee of Kroger.

In terms of stupid questions, there are times where people call customer service or grocery and expect them to be the expert on wine pairings, knowing where one of hundreds of wines are located, or special ordering a ton of cases of wine, and this is a problem when it's a time-sensitive request and the wine consultant isn't on the clock. But it's rare enough that it's not a major hassle. There's also the issue of people trying to sneak wine/beer out of the store without paying or by faking IDs.

It's a massive target for theft.  People steal it all day long.  And you can't do anything.

Wine is a pain in the ass.  Every single wine bottle looks about the same, and there isn't a logical shelf order.  People will come in demanding Painted Pickle chardonnay, and that's 500 nearly identical bottles you will need to check, one by one.  And it doesn't even matter because people really only buy the cheap wine anyways.

It's mainly for safety but also if you manage to get the unbroken bottle back the thief would be like,

customer: "I stubbed my toe and got a black eye because the person I hit first defended themselves and grabbed my stolen bottle back. I am offended and hurt. I will sue! I won't shop here! I'll spend my $2.00 elsewhere where they won't stop me if I shoplift.

manager: we are sooooo sorry. I will handle the employee who did this. Here's a $25.00 gift card

manager to employee: your fired.
