Attempted shoplifting question

(not a troll question, possibly a stupid one though)

What is the point of scanning the items a customer was going to steal but didn't if they don't actually detain the would-be thief?

Tonight a guy was spotted acting suspiciously with a cart full of steaks and beer etc, only thing missing was laundry detergent and beauty stuff honestly. We didn't stop him but he left his full cart near the door and said he was going to get his wallet, he'd be right back and wasn't.

Then we scanned his stuff under 7 sign on to get a voided total. I don't even think they took the receipt, so was it just curiosity? Are these kind of things filed with LP? "Tonight we stopped a guy from stealing $300 worth of stuff" or whatever? I always thought it was just for when the thief was caught to quantify their attempted crime.

It's pretty much for either logging purposes, or if LP wants to press charges on the shoplifter, then they can provide an itemized list of what they shoplifted to the police.

Depends on state laws for shop lifting. California and other states raised the limit on what was considered felony larceny(shop lifting). They want the total so they can use the right charge. Why would they do it if not caught. Well if they have good video, and they catch him again, or if they see him on video stealing again, the police may start looking for him. If they combine the totals they can go for higher charges.
