They want a doctors note for a one day absence?

*Edit* I just realized there are sub forum sections here. If this is in the wrong place I apologize.

I've been working for Kroger for almost 4 months now. I've called off twice, the first time was 3 months ago due to a family emergency where I was stuck at the hospital. Tonight it's because of food poisoning.  There's no way I can work if I'm running to the bathroom every 10 minutes to throw up. Problem is, when I called off (2 and half hours before my shift), I got a manager I wasn't familiar with who was extremely rude. She clearly didn't believe me and said I was required to bring in a doctors note. I don't remember any part of the policy stating a note was needed for a single days absence. Is this true? I won't be able to get to a doctor till Tuesday at the earliest, and by then I won't be sick anymore. I also don't want to pay for such a useless doctors visit.  What do I do? What could happen if I don't get the note? I've never been late and more often than not I agree to stay an extra hour at the end of my shift to help finish things up so it's not like I'm a bad worker despite this manager treating me like one...

Depends on your store manager.  I can't find anything specific in my union handbook.

This forum is not associated with Kroger but you are in a right forum.

Not sure what to advise.  Too expensive to go to a doctor for it.  You lose the hours and then have to spend a shift+ worth of money to see a doctor.  Not cost effective.

I suppose you could save a give of your sickness in a plastic baggie.

They could try to give you a write up.  Insist on having a shop steward or seasoned employee to sit in on the meeting with you if it is for a write up.  Refuse to sign it.  Speak with your union rep before a manager gets ahold of you.  The union should be able to fight it if you don't sign it.

Return and work like normal.  Maybe they will forget about it.

That is precisely why you should never do Kroger any favors.

Shop steward here. You Do Not need a note!!! You are out of probation so no worries. 2 absent days is not excessive. If they push it, call your Union rep immediately.

unless its 2 days or more no note is required. If you get an infectious disease such as a norovirus you gotta be released from the doctor to work.

Thank you everyone for your replies! I called this afternoon and spoke to a different manager. She was very confused that I was told I needed a note and said that wasn't true! The manager I'd spoken to last night was new and assumed I was a frequent "call-offer". Nice to know I won't be wasting my money at the doctors now!
