Do you guys in other divisions have hiring events where the public can come straight in and put in apps, talk to someone, etc?  Makes me wonder how desperate this place is for people if they'll stoop to this.

oh you already work another job, are going to school, can't work weekends or evenings?  You're perfect for us!

It seems like we have a "City Wide Hiring Event" at least once per month, in addition to being in a perpetual state of "Now Hiring!" where we have a sign and table in the main entrance listing what positions we're hiring for (might as well just say we're hiring for all positions, it would take up less space on the sign!) and information pamphlets/cards touting the benefits of working for Kroger (I LOVE how the first thing listed is "Competitive Pay" - $7.55 an hour for most positions at Kroger is competitive HOW?).

People interested though still have to go home and put in an application online, though, since paper applications are a think of the past and they removed all hiring kiosks from stores in my area. It used to be you could fill out an application, in store, at a designated computer station, near the Customer Service desk, but for whatever reason, they pulled those a couple years back.

Kroger is desperate, though. We actually have had to terminate seemingly more and more new hires nowadays because Kroger will hire people BEFORE the background check is completed, and then, when the background check comes back with a big, red flag, the people that have already been working there for two or three weeks end up being terminated on the spot. It's a great waste of time and money training people that end up getting fired on the spot a few weeks later because Kroger couldn't wait for the background check to be completed - and not only that, but it screws up the rest of the week's schedule royally too, creating even more of a mess. That's ultimately what you call not only desperate, but just plain STUPID as well.

lol.

I have one new hire that I am cautious around.  I know he has mood/personality issues but I am willing to work with him.

As far as I've seen there hasn't been any folks coming in with their applications to our department. However there has been so much hiring going on that they don't even know where to put people. Even though someone is clearly telling the new hires to come on in we are ready for ya. But clearly not as there was a dude in there a few days ago that came in and essentially they had no clue what dept. he was supposed to be working in at all. That was such a mess. But in a way appreciated it cause our truck arrived late and we finally had some much taller help with putting stuff away and making our jobs run far more easily. No back strain or nearly falling off a ladder that day!
