Currently a Meat Clerk @ my store for over a year.

Next week I am scheduled a day as a courtesy clerk. Can they do that?

Good question for your Union steward.  Most meat contracts are different from the rest of the store clerks.

Did you ask your Store manager yet?  It might be a clerical error.

Did you do anything wrong recently?  It takes a lot to get kicked down to a CC.

Has business slowed down or a lot of CCs quit recently?

As long as you are not being officially demoted to a CC and not losing any pay, go with the flow.  If you are being demoted, raise hell.

Generally, the store manager can ask anyone working in the store to bag groceries, clean up a spill or go outside to collect carts.  As for being specifically scheduled, that is unusual.

Store manager told me there isn't enough hours at the meat department.

I might be wrong but I think you should be paid at your meat clerk pay rate since you are coded in the system as one, not a CC.

So enjoy being the highest paid CC that day! lol

Can you claim somebody else's hours in the meat department or are you at the bottom of the totem pole?

That's a little odd. I'm in Southwest Division, and in the stores I've worked at, Meat & Seafood employees cannot work outside the department. I'm pretty sure the employees in Meat & Seafood are under a different contract (just like pharmacy is) and the contract forbids them to do anything other than complete tasks within the Meat Market.

Yeah, the store manager can try to get away with violating a union contract, but if an employee brings it to the union's attention and the union decides to, you know, enforce the contract, then the union can override a store manager's decision.

I will be getting paid same as I get paid as a meat clerk.

Just wanted to know if store manager is going against the union contract or not.

Im not the type of person to call the union and start problems but this is first time happening so I just wanted some input from the forum.

Problem is I am not sure how that works. I have more seniority over 2 coworkers since I was promoted to the meat department earlier then them. But they have been working for kroger longer then me.

Depends on when each person became full time on most contracts.  If you are all full time and you became full time first, you should not be on the CC schedule per seniority.   Grieve it asap.

If you are all part time still, then it goes by when you were hired.  Not when you became a meat clerk.  Maybe they offered to take less hours than to go to CC.

With our meat contract, if you average less than 36 hours in 3 months, you lose full time status.
