I think they need to get the ball rolling within a month.  If I was you I would file for unemployment. Or go south to help build The Wall. Good Luck

Grievance (emotion) can last 4-6 months or longer depending upon the severity of the loss.  You will need to file a letter of grievance with your employer (this protects you in the case your emotions let loose at work) and go on fmla or leave of absence, with potential disability.  If filed properly grievance pay should be almost instant.  Store over rides will be quickest and provided by your manager.  You can have up to three days pay as stated in the union handbook.  I know this well as I've had to experience this several times over the last five years.  And a few more to come.  I've basically been playing hospice for three years.  (Big family.)  Only direct family will count: brother, sister, mother, father, partner, members living in same house.  For the time being I would recommend to file for unemployment.  It won't be very much but it will be better than nothing.  Your income level might also qualify you for certain government programs such as ebt, wic and food stamps.
