Should I quit? (Courtesy Clerk)

So I got an after-school job as a courtesy clerk at a local Kroger division and have been working it for about 8 months. I understand that is not a long time based on other positions, but based on how fast CC's come and go at my store, it is quite a while.  I work at a marketplace location so significantly more employees are needed. I try my best, smile, and say thank you. Many other CC's who have been hired AFTER me have been trained as cashiers and are checking for their whole shifts now. WTF confuse? I still bag groceries, bring in carts, and take people's frozen **** back that they don't want for my whole shift. It makes me feel like I am doing something wrong but the CC's hired after me are lazy af. It almost feels like management likes the lazy ones who stand around on their phones much more than those of us who actually do our damn jobs. This is also not to mention that my breaks and lunches are, without fail, at least an hour late every day, and I never ever hear an update on my job performance. All I need is just a "Great job!" or "Can you start doing this or this instead of this?". I have some good friends who work there with me but they have all been moved up to checking and U-Scan before I got there. This is all not to mention the totally incompetent (and mean) scheduler at our store whose favorite activity is to white out the paper copy of the schedule at the store and write in different times to screw us all over (The head clerks then get the lovely job to call all of us and pretend like they don't know why we aren't at work). I feel completely unappreciated and have been doing some job-searching, but I want to see if there is any advice on here before I take the plunge and give my two weeks. I am also planning on sharing my concerns with the front-end manager as a last resort before I quit.

It is possible, that they want to keep you bagging, because you are good at it. But that's not a good reason for not getting a promotion. That's THEIR problem, if they can't hire or retain enough quality baggers.

Before you quit, definitely talk to your FA, if you think he is a reasonable person. If not, talk straight to your store manager. Many times, things don't happen at Kroger, unless you fight for it. By that, I mean you have tell them what you want, ask them what do you need to do to get it, and then do it and keep telling them what you want to happen.

I'm not sure if baggers also declare intent to move to other departments. But once a year, we fill out a form, where we can declare that we want to either stay at our position, or move to new position or another department, should one position become available. You should ask them about it.

Don't be discouraged by your managers not appreciating your work. That's how it is at Kroger. But it should give you a good reason why you don't want to make this your career. Good luck!

I had the same issue.  I got hired on as a courtesy clerk.  Due to my mild disability they kept me in that position for ever and ever.  I saw the same thing you are noticing:  individuals with less experience, less training, less education and opposite gender(s) were getting promoted to cashier within less than six months.  They kept me as courtesy clerk for 5 years.  I didn't get promoted to cashier until all the senior cashiers quit and they were left with no other choice.  Hard worker, two A.A. degrees that should have offered me management and then some, more common sense than the individuals they were hiring and so on.

Over the years I noticed there are only a few ways to get promoted through the company:  Be a quick learner/hard worker, be a favorite, transfer to other stores for promotions, be a male and so on in that fashion.  If you want a job with more promotional opportunities I suggest you look for another one.  Just don't quit until you find another one.

I had the same problem until I went to my union stewards and we arranged a meeting with the store manager and I had to write a letter of intent. But also we lost two cashiers and I was one of the ones they move up. Sometimes it just takes a whole lot of bugging to get them to do it or it takes a large turnover. You sometimes have to make a lot of noise and also check your availability that was one thing that held me down until I fixed it.
