I read here sometimes but dont write. The past three days were rough. Management decided to suddenly enforce the attendance policy. Mind you in the short time I have been there they never did so I knew nothing of it. Everybody just hung loose and called in like it was nothing.
So now they got upset and decided after months to enforce it and are digging up the past. My question is since they have not been enforcing the rules can we grieve our absences based on the managers creating the environment that made it seem like we could call out without structure?
Also, can the managers just pick how to punish. Some people who had a dozen absences were laughing about not getting fired. They got the same verbal as I did. I thought that was unfair. It felt like targeting. Management can just fire who they want and save who they want. Is there a time limit on how soon they have to approach you to give you a written or verbal for multiple absenses?
What state are you in? You need to speak to your shop steward or union rep to get the best information for your district.
The attendance policy is in place to make sure workers are there when they are supposed to be there.
Here, the rule I heard is the managers have 3 shifts to give you a write up. They can't go back any further than that to give a write-up. I used to think it was a week from the incident.
After you get a write-up, it can be added to other write-ups for similar offenses to take you a step closer to termination. Write-up, write-up, write-up, suspension, and then termination if you have more write-ups within 90 days. Call ins are added with call ins. Tardies are added to tardies.
Yes, you can grieve if saying, "so and so was not given a write-up for similar offense on such and such date". Everyone must be written up equally. The union can look at company records and see if this is true. They can also demand that all write-ups be torn up and everyone gets a fresh start beginning on a certain date. That is extreme but I have heard of it happening.
If it is just one write-up for you, don't worry about it and stay out of trouble for the next 3 months.
Speaking as someone who has never called in, been late, having to cover for the ones who do call in, and always requested my days off ahead of time "It's about time they crack down on those always calling in". It drives me crazy when people use the Union so that they don't have to do the work they were hired to do. The ones who use the union are the ones who just want to say they have a job, but don't want to do the dirty work. If you are so unhappy with your job and don't want to have to WORK, then give your 2 weeks notice and quit.

I had two call ins last night. Same freaking people. Big trucks, a lot of work and not enough people overnight. Fortunately, my management team doesn't play around on attendance. They will write them up if it calls for it and send them out the door when appropriate.
I have another one that just got back from a 3 day suspension and already has 1 call in since then. 1 more call in within 75 days and she will not have a job.
