So I know everyone says they can't make you come in on your day off but what about if you're a dept head? Because I was called this morning and I said no because I've had personal things to do all day. They said they we're expecting company and to let them know if I could make it. I said I didn't think I could and haven't called back since... Am I screwed now?
Never ever answer the phone if Kroger calls you. I never answer the phone anyway if I don't recognize the number since sometimes they use their cell phones to call you. As far as being screwed, I guess it depends on what shape your department was in. I find in most cases, when they say company is coming, they don't give the bakery a second thought unless it's a problem department. The only thing they'll probably look at is if you have enough Mother's Day stuff on display.
I've been yelled at by store management for not answering the phone at six am as a backup. Since my time is not respected, I block certain numbers on my day off. I won't be called for every little question from people with more years experience than I have just because I'm a lead or demands I come back to work the same day from management with no overtime. I've got my health to look after.
Just screen your calls. If it's unimportant (like them calling you on your day off) don't answer. If they go butthurt mode on you, just say you were busy at the moment. Or better yet, erase the call when it comes in. You can also say you never got the call.
Salaried employees are different however. Our DM says that if you're called in, EVEN on your vacation, and say just landed at your destination via airplane and get the call, you can well better be on the next flight home. But nobody ever does. This only applies to store management and ask because they are always 'on the clock' being as they make salary.
In your case disregard the call. Have fun on your day off.
