How honest would you say your co-workers are?

I'm curious how honest would you guys say your co-workers are, that you work with?

Bit of background: I was working Thursday, and it was a pretty typically busy day, and a even more typically skeletal crew of myself, the cake decorator and one of my back up managers. Which was all good, nothing unusual about that. Well long story short, a customer came in to check on a cake she ordered from our pastry chef for a donation she wanted it for. As well as purchase another cake from the pastry case.

Again, nothing out of the ordinary there, other than the fact that the donation cake was for the 12th instead of the 13th. And it was to be picked up at 8 or 9 a.m.(which I thought was rather silly as the pastry chef doesn't even get in for her shift til 9. So no way she could decorate a cake in such a short span of time) I corrected that and even told my back up manager about the situation. And while my back up manager called the pastry chef to let her know what was going on. I had written on a few other customers' cakes and even boxed up the second cake that the Donation chick had wanted. All cool.

Well after I finish doing all that, my back up manager looks at the order, and says that since the pastry chef said the order was for ANY cake. It would be cool if we grabbed one of the two tier cakes out of the case and box it up for the donation and it would be fine. Even slap a make it right sticker on there as well. Which again nothing out of the ordinary and typically what we do.

The issue is when I had began to cut a hole into the dome lid for the cake(as we usually have to do that for the pastry chef's cakes, as she never gets any domes tall enough to fit over the whole cake properly. So we have to cut out a hole for the bottom tier. And get another lid to go over the top part as well). Welp, said back up manager was watching me do it and was like, "you don't have to cut it so close to the edge" or some such like that. And took my box cutter and did a hole herself. After which she had pocketed it for a bit, while we looked for some tape to secure the lids and I printed off the label with the price on it. And at that point neither one of us thought any more about it.

Well a little after she leaves for the day, we again get slammed with more customers. And I don't even think about my box cutter until I have to open a new box of doughnut boxes. To which, I figured hey maybe my back up manager just forgot she had it and took it with her. Cool, I go into the office and get one of the left handed ones. And figured I could call the next day and ask her about it. Which, I did just that. And asked her if maybe she realized she had two box cutters when she got home. As I had misplaced mine the other day(wasn't trying to out rightly accuse her of taking mine. And starting some ish over something so small). And she was like, "The one I have has a warped blade and no she didn't have two. But just get one from the office." I didn't go back and forth about it over the phone and just let it go.

But honestly, I don't know if it's just me being petty. Or just the fact that my back up manager didn't even stop and think that she MIGHT have walked off with something that wasn't her's. Most especially since out of the majority of time that we have been at the new store. She has NOT used a box cutter and has opened boxes by tearing the tape off of them. And not saying she did it on purpose or to be nasty. But kind of telling when someone thinks that they just happened to be "blessed" with something out of nowhere. And don't even think to ask the last person they interacted with, if it was their property or not.

Please let it go. You are worrying about something that is, in the big picture, rather petty.   There are constantly items such as pens, markers, notepads, clipboards, box cutters and similar things "floating around" and they often are accidentally (or intentionally) pocketed and taken home. It's a fact of life in a busy store.   Ask for a new box cutter from the office....... at my store there are usually a supply of them when someone needs one.

I would also add that most of the employees I work with are reasonably honest, but it depends on the situation.   Are you 100% honest with someone if they say "do you like my new hairdo" and you hate to tell them "it looks awful"?

I have to say "You might be over reacting a little" I will admit small things like would bother me for a bit, but I would get over it. Don't let her use your stuff again. I bring my own pens, markers, gloves, etc to work. People "BORROW" them all the time and I never see them again. This is why I make sure I have more than 1.

LOL.  She did not do it on purpose.  It is probably an auto reaction.  Use the cutter and then pocket it.  Just ask for it back next time you see her.

They are hard to come by sometimes.  Especially lefties(red).  If I see one sitting around in the back room, I will snatch it and give it away later.  I was putting them all in my drawer for a while and they all vanished on their own.

We keep them in the supplies cabinet in the office with all the other office supplies.  They even have their own key retailing label!  :)

I would have asked for it back right then and there.  I know others may not agree with me, but when you borrow something, you need to return it promptly and in the same condition in which it was given to you.

That was a long story over a blade. I think maybe the issue is WAY deeper between you two.

True enough on being petty. I can admit to it fairly enough. Even will go so far as to have looked up the site to buy myself 2 more and a even a holster to put it in once I get em(only because we only have the left handed ones left. And I don't know how often they tend to order in new ones over so many months. And with me going in and out of the freezer more times than most people in my dept. I definitely need to make sure I have the right equipment, so I'm not accidentally cutting myself going too quickly using the wrong tool).

Ironically yes I am, lol. Because even if my mouth says "I like the curls or the flip" of the hair do. If it's looking totally crazy, my facial reaction is giving me away anyway, so kind of defeats the purpose of even trying to say I "love" it. When I don't.

Oh I've more than learned on that one, in regards to pens! I've bought several packs from the dollar store, so I don't mind now if someone takes one of those. As I have more.

Just that, at the time, I didn't know where we could buy more of the box cutters. So folks were kind of coveting them in our dept. And the DH only gets probably 10 of the right handed ones and 10 of the left. And there is always a bunch of left handed ones, well, left in the office. Which nothing wrong with using those for the boxes. But given that we OFTEN have to "re-construct" the pastry chef's cake lids to fit her cakes in there. I just don't want to accidentally cut my hand open using the wrong tool.

But yea, as I said in another post, I found the site where I could buy my own and ordered two and a holster for em. And will just use this engraving pen I have to put my initials in it and do something to make the letters stand out. So that way, if someone tries to walk off with it again, can for sure say, that one is definitely mine.

You need red ones? Heck we have a ton in our office. Would gladly trade you at least a couple of em for more green ones.

This! And normally I would have. But we were so dang on swamped that day. It had slipped my mind that she had it til I needed it again as I had mentioned. I do totally agree with you though, in regards to returning folks stuff as you have found it.

And actually why I'm not usually a big fan of lending out my stuff in general. As I know with some people, you will never see your **** again, period. But, I've known this particular back up manager since we were int eh 4th grade and had been friends throughout the years. Never had a bad rapport with her at all.

So I was just kind of surprised that she wouldn't have just handed it back to me and kept it moving.

That was a long story over a blade. I think maybe the issue is WAY deeper between you two.

1. I'm a pretty long winded person on explaining things, just part of conveying the scene as it were and how I am.

2. A few other points:

Actually the issue isn't that deep really. As I already stated in another post. I've known this particular back up manager since we were in the 4th grade and were friends throughout the years.

Only really grew apart in high school and college years for a time. And met back up through Kroger. No real beef between us, aside from me wondering why she was calling me Miss before my first name all the time when I was first hired on. I mean we've never had a formal rapport and at the time she wasn't even a back up manager either at our old store. So I thought that was odd.

And as I also mentioned in another post, this person and I never had a bad rapport in the past. And as far as I know don't really have one now. She also always seemed to be the kind of person that would borrow something and return it as well. So I guess it just surprised me, that someone that I've known for so long, just up and walked off with something that wasn't her's and never even thought to look back and be like "oh snap, is this your's? Sorry about that, put it into my pocket by mistake." Which I have to admit I've often done myself at times. And at least try and get into contact with the person about when I can return their stuff to them or where they want me to drop it off to, so they can come and get it themselves. Only time I've ever really spaced on giving someone their stuff back is when my mind was totally somewhere else. Which, is where I think her mind was too that day. Especially as she is on vacation this week.

But yea, I guess my only real issues with the situation, is that when I had called her, she had for one sounded like it was her cutter in the first place. And not like oh yea, that might have been yours I forgotten to give back. And for two, given how many of the cake dome lids we have to cut on at times in a given week. I don't want to be trying to do it with a left handed cutter and end up slicing open my hand cause I'm using it wrong as I'm not even left handed in the first place.

I'd also hate for her to accidentally cut herself with the blade on mine and need a tetnus shot or something. As I had previously cut my own finger on the blade(hadn't realized it was raised up at the time when I had stuck it into my pocket doing truck one day). And her likely wind up getting sick or something. Not like I'm out trying to spread tetnus or anything else deliberately. But things happen.

Normally I can't either, but hey. Everyone has their passion projects at times. And for some it's grammar.
