Unapproachable managers and how to get help from them
Permalink

Honestly, I haven't been in the workforce for long. I've noticed, there's a couple of managers I've tried to get help from, including the HR person of the store, and they're always unapproachable. Straight-faced, monotone voice, avoiding eye contact.

I get that they've got things to do. But I just had one simple question, and it's like pulling teeth. Now, the other managers and supervisors, they're friendly to me and helpful. So how do I get those other unapproachable managers to help me when I need help? Or is that pretty much impossible? Cause the friendly managers aren't always available.

Honestly, I'm not sure! I still haven't figured that out. When I see them, if I have something to ask them, I just ask. If I don't get a response. I ask one of my colleagues. I paged store management once to ask about garbage bags. We were out of stock. So, I was just going to go on the floor and grab some. I didn't want to do it without knowing if it was OK. She didn't respond to my page. So I waited until a colleague came back to the department and asked them. Sometimes the managers just don't want to be bothered or assume the worst when you are paging them.

Yeah, I've noticed that some store managers just don't want to be bothered with the small things... even if those things happen to be a part of their job. They prefer to push questions off to the co managers.

Funny you should mention garbage bags.  I got an email saying they were out of stock from the supplies warehouse a few days ago.  We are already scrounging to find last ones scattered through out store.

Yeah, we were out of garbage bags last week. I'm not sure if they have gotten them in yet or not!

They may want to be unapproachable, but their position means they can't be. Just approach them, & approach them again with a follow up if need be. Be polite, but be persistent.
