This lady caused me to have an panic attack
Permalink

I have social anxiety. I haven't been working for Kroger for long, but I work as a cashier. This lady came to my lane with piles of food. I looked at her and smiled and then she said "you need help?" but in a not so friendly way. There was no bagger on my lane and she said "you better get somebody to help you out. get on your little call phone thing." I had to ask one of the courtesy clerks to come help me bag, cause she demanded it. Then as I was scanning her stuff, she asked me how long I've been working there. I said about a month. Then she said "you're about to get fired."

I said nothing to her and just kept scanning, but at this point I was feeling terrible. My heart was racing, I felt a lot of fear, and my hands were trembling. I was just wishing to get this order done as quick as possible. And when I was done scanning, she told me to charge a certain amount to her food stamps card, and when that came back declined, she told her friend beside her how incompetent I was, and that I put in the wrong amount, even though I put in the amount she said. So she gave me a different amount to charge her card, and it went through, and then she paid the rest with cash.

After I handed her receipt, she said "thank you." I said nothing. 15 minutes later, my hands were still shaking. That was the worst experience I've had so far working here.

Yikes, what a pain to deal with a customer like that.

I am sorry that happened.

Sad that she acted like that.

Hopefully, you will have better customers in the future.

Thank you. I guess what doesn't kill us makes us stronger. I just hope she isn't going to bad mouth me to a manager or something and actually get me fired.

If she was that bad, the managers probably already know what she's like.  I wouldn't worry about it.   Unfortunately, you're going to meet people like that occasionally.  If it bothers you, you might want to inquire about openings in other departments.

Managers know mean customers are a dime a dozen. Just don't yell back.

A lot of Food Stampers are rude and have an unearned sense of self-entitlement.......which is probably why these ones are on Food Stamps, they can't function in society or at a job.

I, on the other hand, have a highly developed sense of IDGAF what you say or do. I just look at the azzholes like a cow at a new gate and put them on IGNORE.

Yeah, don't even let people like that bother you. It's just best to move on and forget her :)

Don't worry, she won't be coming around as much. She's about to see a vast decrease in her food stamps coming soon.

You did really well!
Don't even worry about that customer, every now and then you'll get a rude customer and they'll talk bad maybe even "threaten" your job. As long as you keep calm and don't respond to their attacks you'll be perfectly fine.
Most likely management won't hear a word of what happened. If they do, at worst (from my experience) they'll ask you what happened and when you explain everything to them they'll understand. My floor managers, (hopefully yours as well) understand that there are some really rude customers and it's not necessarily the cashier's fault. As long as you did everything right (and it sounds like you did) you'll be fine.

Overall try not to let the rude customers get to you. There will be a few rude ones, but I've seen far more nice and interesting customers come through my lines to more than make up for it. Best thing you can do is to take some deep breaths and try to calm down after interacting with a rude customer.

Were you working the express lane? Here in my division we are not held accountable for our speed if someone brings a lot of things through express, on a good day we have someone routing people to the correct lanes. I have the most trouble out of the elderly and those on food stamps which sometimes are both. When they get really hateful I usually call a supervisor over that way they can see what is going on and in the case of my store, have your back.

Just be yourself and get to know the customers and when you encounter ones like that person just do what you can to get them out of your lane as quick as possible and move on to someone else.
