just have to get this out of my head!

The position has been open for over 2 years. When I first got hired, every single one of my team members told me that they didn't want to be Lead. They didn't want the responsibility that comes with being the Lead. For my first 5 months I thought we had a Lead. I spoke with the RGM and asked them what I do if I'm interested in becoming a Lead. They said "You talk to me." They said "Actually this department doesn't have a Lead." I then looked at the person I thought was the Lead and asked them "Do you think I have the potential to be a Lead?"  They said "Yes" I then talked to the store managers and let them all know I'm interested in being the Lead. A few weeks go by. I didn't know they were actually considering making me the Lead. I was hoping they were hearing me, but didn't know they were working on it. I kept getting told that I needed to learn how to talk to people. I went to work thinking that I was just going to learn how to use the gun and a few other things. When I walked in Everyone in my department was P.O.'d. I was then informed that they were mad because they just found out I was being trained for the Lead position. A couple of them even threatened to quit. I don't know what the big deal is! Not one of them wanted it. They all knew I was interested a month ago. They all had an opportunity to grab at it. They had the seniority to get the position if they wanted it. None of them even tempted. Not one of them showed they were interested in the position, until they were told I was being trained for it. I don't want to be the Lead, to be their boss. I want to be the Lead to put myself in a better position. I want to be the Lead because we need a Lead. I want to be the Lead because we need team work. I want it for the hours. I want it because I like my job. I'm there to do my job! My job is what I'll do!

Open for two years? I know many people don't want the stress, but you would think someone would want the money bad enough.

You would think that, but none of them wanted to be told what to do. I was told by one of them that I have to talk to them like they are 5 years old. What?? If I have to talk to you like you are 5 then you aren't mature enough to even work. Like I was told by othes it is obvious why they didn't get offered it or chosen for it. They are too childish to handle it.

Maybe your fellow workers think you're a fussbudget.  I don't even know you personally but judging by your posting history, I think you're one too.

Maybe those that are complaining now are upset, because maybe they wanted to be the Lead, but management "didn't hear them". Because they are not Lead material. If they offered it to you, over those others, there must be a good reason. They can't blame you.

Keep it cool, professional, be the Lead. Good luck!

I tend to agree with this poster. Have a few like that at my store as well. We don't often get positions open in our Deli/Bakery. But when we have someone with a bit more work ethic go for a lead spot if it comes available. You are often hearing from those that have been there longer, but only do enough to get by, having a major fit over it. Which is so asinine to me. Cause if they wanted the position they would have not only shown interest right off the bat. But would have put in the work to have EARNED the position a LONG time ago.

So I second keeping it cool, professional, and just the job you are after. As you said you are about the job. Keep things about the job and don't let them make you feel like crap because you had the balls to go after what you want.

No, the reason the people who have been there a long time aren't leads or department heads is because they know leads and department heads are treated like crap.  The reason there are so many postings for leads and department heads is because nobody can handle the workload with the amount of hours they're given.  If a department isn't given enough hours to get the work done, then changing leads or department heads isn't going to do a darn thing.

Screw them.  They snooze, they looze.

Take the job, do what you can to get the department in shape.  Don't look back.

Everyone in my department wants to be in charge but very few have the common sense to get the work done efficiently.

I am the manager.  I make the important decisions.  If they don't like it, they can go find another job.
