I recently found out there is someone new who does the schedule. I have been requesting weekends off , but this week it's been denied. I'm off on Sunday but they have me working from 11-7 on Saturday. There are plenty of cashiers that could have been on the schedule for Saturday. Do you think it's because of the first/holiday weekend ? I do plan on talking to them about it. Could I be fired/written up for this if I choose not to come ? For personal reasons.
Do you not pick your schedule via select-a-schedule? If you have high enough seniority, you should be able to get that off unless they have everyone working. It can become a union issue at that point, but most cases managers accommodate schedule changes. Worst case, you can try swapping shifts with another co-worker.
You've been requesting weekends off. How about you can't have every weekend off because the weekends are the business time. And yeah it's the weekend going into Fourth of July which is a pretty big food holiday.
When you put in the "request" in the system it says requests are just requests. You need to learn that you're there for Kroger, not the other way around.

Before I was a Department Manager, I had a coworker tell me, " I work to live. I don't live to work." regarding working for Kroger.
Now that I am a Department head, I have coworkers that can't work Fridays. Don't want 40 hours (which I am allowed to schedule part timers). Want several days off in a row because working more than 3 days in a row is too hard. I do accept requests, then my coworkers call in during the week anyway. I am ready to start denying requests for needs of the business.

Under our contract, it is a no call, no show if the request is denied even if you call in. No big deal for one.
Try to get a co worker to trade with you. Plead with your manager is about all you can do.

Sounds like you just don't have many folks that want to do the job unfortunately. And in a way I think that is how it is in my dept. as well at times. Although I think for those that are in college, our DH should be willing to be more open to them about needing particular hours. Cause after all, he already should know that with each semester comes different times for classes. So if the college student was available for this earlier set of hours one time. Doesn't necessarily mean they will ALWAYS be available for that time again if it's a new term.
Kind of actually makes me wish that our DH and the scheduler could have better communications about stuff like that. They seem to for folks that have a second job at times. And then from there try and schedule people accordingly. I'd also think that even if it's not in our hand books. There should just be a mandatory rule that everyone in the dept. unless they have some special circumstances as to why they can't be there, has to work at least 1 or 2 Sunday evenings a month. It tends to get hella annoying when the same people have to ALWAYS work the weekend, cause other folks don't show up or call off. It's like I have things to do on the weekend as well and I don't know, might want to spend some time with my family as well.
Or better yet, have a rule about there are only so many times you can call off per month. I know life happens and all kinds of stuff arises at times. But I totally feel like some people just deliberately call off for the heck of it just cause they don't want to come in and work with particular people or for whatever their hours are. Like next week, I can for sure tell you right now our back up cake decorator/fellow bakery clerk is going to contract some contagious illness and can't come in to work from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. as those hours just aren't agreeable to her. But if there was a rule in place that she has maxed out her call offs or hasn't worked enough hours that month to earn another call off. Then she has to bring her behind in there and work, regardless! But I'm quite sure that she will call off and they will be trying to ask me or another back up person to extend their hours that day. Which is vastly unfair as I'm always on closing in the firs place and do my time no probs. My co-worker often leaves much earlier than I do, and she still witches about she can't possibly do any back up cupcakes or another order or anything, and she still has 3 hours left in her day. So the few times they ask her to be a closer she should just take it and keep it moving.
I know I can't have every weekend off. I have literally been working every weekend for the past eleven months. You don't know my circumstances regarding having the weekends off. And what you need to know is that just because I work for Kroger doesn't mean I give my life to them. I only get 12 hours a week due to my age. And yet they decide to schedule me on a day I decide not to work. Not only that my availability is set to unavailable on the weekends. What's the point of setting an availability if they don't look at it. Don't respond to my post if you want to criticize for something you don't know about.

Oh you poor thing. The only time I get a weekend off is when I go on vacation.

I always thought the busiest days were weekends. Lately, it seems like every day is the busiest.
If you are part time, triple check your availability on eschedule. Make absolutely certain it is set they way you need. It might need to be rechecked every three months. Availability rules are different from part time to full time here. If you were hired to be unavailable for weekends, then the union can make them honor that. Ask your Union steward for confirmation. They must give you a minimum of 12 hours in order for you to be considered an employee.

I have 3 mothers with young kids they watch during the daytime. The other two are just immature adults living with their parents that don't seem to need the money. Just want to say they have a job.
I am allowed to schedule hours that I need but I don't have enough people that want to work 40 hours. Most part timers want to work 32 hours and call in every other week to only get 24 hours.

Ahh, thanks for the clarification. And if it were possible, I'd gladly take the 40 hours if it got me on the track to enough consecutive weeks to get full time. My student loans would greatly appreciate that for sure.

Sad thing is, people just don't want to work nowadays. And it's not about age at all because i see it in all age groups. I try to honor all requests but sometimes things happen, you know, like holidays, or vacations, or store walks. But if i dare to mess up anyone's ~routine~ there's always a sh*tstorm. I need to stop worrying about that and just go off needs of the business as well.
