Kroger is looking to acquire Target, according to what the store manager at my store said. Don't know how far down the road this is, but it won't be a merger... Kroger will own Target. Since the Kroger Marketplace format hasn't exactly been a "success" I'm guessing what Kroger may be planning is stick with Signature stores, keep what Marketplace stores it has but not build new ones, and essentially use Target/Super Target to appeal to high end customers/customers looking to buy more than just food/OTC products and so on.

Target has a much bigger market cap than Kroger. Target could buy Kroger. What if CVS bought Kroger?
Honestly, an alibaba takeover might just be with the Doctor ordered for Kroger. Influx of new capital, visionary at the helm, willing to take risks to compete with Amazon & Walmart and establishing a huge US footprint.
