My store has been pestering me to become a Front End Manager for 3 years now, they like my work ethic and demeanor but with all of that being said, I can never really see myself in a managerial position. It just doesn't entice me.
A long while back, I learnt the customer service desk and the fuel center when prior, I only primarily did cashiering. Now, I almost regret advancing further.
Why? They take advantage of you. Call you on your days off, change your shift without telling you right as you walk in and expect you to be okay with it. "Hey X, your working fuel today". I'm not at all enthralled to be working for this company and would rather just come in and check, bag groceries, or go do carts. I don't care to be involved in the intricacies of the business, I don't get paid enough to be.
I know this all seems naive and I know the company expects you to be flexible, it just bugs me how they take advantage of you once you learn new aspects of the business and the responsibilities those aspects hold.
Does anyone else either regret or has regretted learning new things for the company at the cost of your sanity?
That's just how it goes in Kroger land. They put pressure on the few good employees they luck out on hiring and keeping, and pressure them into learning things that are above their position and PAY RATE. Theres nothing more that Kroger loves than taking good clerks and making them learn to do the tasks of department heads without dept head pay. But don't worry, you'll be first in line for the new dept head opening! As soon as it becomes open in 5 years

I NEVER regret learning everything I can at any job I do , but I can certainly sympathize what what you are saying!!! I know Kroger does take advantage of their best workers.
Yes, and that is why I transferred not only to another Kroger store, but also transferred departments on top of that. I've been so, so much happier since then and far, far less stressed out. Screw that whole "learn this, learn that, but oh by the way, you're not getting a pay increase for learning this and learning that." If you expect more from me, then you sure as heck better pay me more.
