Which one you like doing the most? I'd go with that one. That way, you aren't dreading coming in as much.

Depends on the store. I wouldn't take backup produce unless the store already has a good produce crew. Otherwise you'll be coming into a mess everyday and you will eventually get sick of picking up the department every morning. So, if anything, really consider produce first before you jump into it.

Produce also tends to get the weakest employees and management tells you to train the untrainable. Produce requires a work ethic and some intelligence to keep your department fresh, they just can't throw any typical dumb lazy person into the department and expect good results, but they do. So be prepared.

Back up meat cutter definitely pays the most, if you plan on staying in that position. If you plan on moving upward, produce head is probably the highest paid hourly manager (in our contract, and they get the old contract benefits). Produce management is also the ideal path if you plan on moving to upper management, as most store managers have grocery or produce management background. Produce is difficult though, as you'll be dealing with highly perishables and their weekly labor hours tend to be on the lower end (which you'll really feel the squeeze if you have a bad crew and/or bad support from store management)
