Customers getting angry with me for holding on to their cigarettes
Permalink

So in an effort to stop customers from stealing cigarettes from me while I'm on Uscan, I decided to hold on to them and tell the customers that I'll give it to them after their done paying. Most of the customers were perfectly okay with that. But there were a couple that gave me serious attitude and almost seemed offended that I did that. "That's not what the other guy, who was here yesterday, did." They said to me.

I don't like getting confrontational with people, especially since I'm not even sure if this is an official policy that I'm supposed to hold on to the cigs till after they pay.

Am I doing the right thing? I also learned that when I grab cigarettes for customers that aren't going through my line, I'm supposed to hand it directly to the cashier who will be checking them out and not directly to the customer. Is that true? Is that what you guys do at your stores?

You are doing it right. At my store I quess some customers walked out with them without paying. Cashiers can go get their own if they do not have a bagger which is all the time now. My store used to have a front end manager who would have a hissy fit if cashiers got cigerettes she would start yelling elms elms. Thank god we got a new manager who lets us go and get them ourselves. It is so much easier for us to get them now.

Why don't you just scan the Cigs Then give them to them

The customer knows that you know they have them.  They also know that you can see everything that is rung up on your screen.  So why not just hand them to them and let them scan them?  Another thing you can do is scan them yourself and then hand them to the customer.  If they try to leave without paying, it's shoplifting whether it's cigarettes or not.

That is the rule in our store-it prevents someone walking out with the smokes without paying

You are doing it correctly according to company contract.  You scan the item, the customer pays, then once the receipt prints out you hand it to them.  This happens with the alcohol as well.
