Empty Lead/Backup positions
Permalink

Has anyone noticed how many lead and assistant lead positions go open every week and then even some of those don't get filled? And those that don't get filled get posted several more times to not get filled at all, until Kroger is forced to pick some random part timer or somebody entirely unqualified?

Why do you think this is?

Why hire a lead and give lead pay when you can just get a regular clerk to handle those duties. In my last store, the only back ups were in the meat department/front end (even on front end they started making regular cashiers work as supervisors). They can sucker workers into doing these jobs under the guise of "training" (yay, free labor for Kroger). They milk it out as long as they can until they're forced to officially promote (I knew people in this position for 2 years+).

That's because all the good lead/ managers quit because of all the programs that came out, management expect to much out of them without barely any help. And whatever is left from the good management team they promoted to being co managers. It's like that everywhere pretty soon it's just going to be newbies leading depts.

I remember when people used to fight to get a department head position.  Now, they fight to avoid it.

Kroger sets you up to fail and employees know this and that's why a lot of people are hesitant to apply. You don't get the hours you need to adequately run a department while satisfying all the standards/practices that Kroger wants performed on a daily basis. You a lot of times don't get the quality help from your team under you to meet goals because so many employees hate their jobs/are protected by the union/don't care/feel undervalued. Store level management generally doesn't/can't support you because their hands are tied by the higher-ups.

Oh, and the pay typically isn't all that great for the amount of stress/aggravation/work load.

Yeah its not easy being a dept head when you get no help from corporate. Just keep throwing all these standards out there and cut hours, or worse, have the hours but no people to work for you. I'm trying to run a bakery in a store that does 120k+ a day on me and 3 other people (one of which is restricted) and they wonder why we can't keep tables full or have backup on cookies...

The pay never happens. They tell the job pays 18 and you never get it. Just lies.
